    Regarding that Alpha1234 guy

This idiot unintentionally dox’d himself while complaining about a stove, lmao. A simple google search reveals this guy is a long term, 10+ year scammer.

    What says you Vic?

It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

Not quite as bad as I expected.

Looks like he was accused by multiple people in mid-2005 of unethical behavior regarding eBay sales and trades of collectible casino chips. No real proof is provided.

However, it seems the complaints about him are isolated to that short period of time almost 15 years ago, and I can't find any complaints since then.

I've haven't seen any complaints on PFA or any poker forum about him ripping anyone off.

    Or am I missing something?

Looks like he's guilty of nitting someone out of separate shipping and handling for 6 $1 poker chips and being a dick.

Being a dick over shipping elevates his status in my book.

Thanks for pointing me to this, Hockey Guy.

The controversy was several years ago and based upon old fee structures used by eBay. Unlike today, way back then eBay charged sellers a “posting fee” and “final value fee” on all auctions. Both of these need to be understood as eBay has since modified this practice.

The posting fee was based up the starting bid price. It was free for items with a starting bid price of 1¢ to 99¢, but went up from there. Sellers, knowing that there would be sufficient interest for their items, would smartly post their auction with a 99¢ starting bid price to avoid eBay’s posting fees. Today, eBay no longer charges a posting fee. So, the items I would post, all $1 casino chips by the way, were given a starting bid price of 99¢. (Long time eBay sellers would also remember that eBay once charged a fee to include pictures with your auction too.)

The Final Value Fee was solely a percentage of the final sale price of the auction. It hasn’t changed all that much from what eBay charges today with one important difference. Back then, the fee was calculated from just the final bid price. Today it’s calculated from the final bid price PLUS the shipping price. That’s a big difference. If you had an item, like a casino chips, which routinely was valued for $3 (most new $1 casino chips are still valued for between $3 and $4) you could post the auction on eBay in a number of ways. The worst case, meaning the case where eBay would charge you the highest fees, would be to post the item with a $3 starting bid and no shipping. You would be charged a posting fee plus a Final Value Fee based upon the $3 sale price. The best case, which many sellers quickly adopted, was to list the casino chip with a 99¢ starting bid but charge $2 for shipping. In this case there would be no posting fee and the final value fee would be based upon the 99¢ sale price. For these small auctions, every penny counts. But in both cases, the buyer was charged $3 (actually $2.99 in the first example and $3.00 in the second.).

In the case in question, there was a buyer who bid on multiply auctions. All were $1 casino chips and all, as I recall, had a 99¢ starting bid price and a $2 shipping charge. The buyer incorrectly assumed that I would combine all of the shipped charges. He thought he would be able to pay a flat $2 for shipping and only 99¢ for each chip (I think he bid on 13 total autions) – thus getting each chip well below their $3 value. eBay did allow sellers to combine shipping back then. This did not have to be stated in the auction details under the shipping tab since eBay did not profit from the shipping charges. (Today, of course, eBay does profit from shipping charges.) The second mistake by the buyer was to not inquire about combined shipping charges prior to bidding, or even prior to the auctions ending. Had he inquired, I would have told him that he could not combine shipping charges. It was only after the auctions ended that he demanded to pay a flat shipping fee. After I explained that it was not how I structured the auctions, he went ballistic. He created a scammer thread on a well known casino chip forum and demanded that I ship each chip separately after he had made payment (kind of spiteful knowing that it would cost me more in stamps). He simply did not understand how those eBay auctions worked, or knew it and was upset once he realized that he could not get the items below cost.

The forum, like many, was created by a small club and run by a small group of cronies. Since he was a member (one had to pay annual dues to join the club) and I was not, they took his side and piled on with the nasty remarks. After several years I stopped participating in the forum, but by then the damage to my reputation there was done. Yes, you can Google my name and scroll to find that thread from 15 years ago or so. Oddly enough, that buyer no longer is a member of their club and has exited the casino chip collection hobby years ago, while I still collect and have one of the largest collections of $1 chips in the world. While I’d like to have that old thread removed or reworded, it isn’t really that important to me. Like most stories, there a lot more back story to it as personalities clash and feeling are hurt.

The bottom line to this story was that the eBay buyer thought he’d get one over on the seller, and that wasn’t going to happen, so he attempted to trash my reputation instead.

I have sold on eBay since 1996, yes it has changed vastly since the glory days. I can see why the buyer felt raped by you not combining shipping. You can still combine shipping.

Your best move to avoid bad feelings and reviews was to post a higher price that includes free shipping factoring in additional costs.

The other way to avoid bad feelings is to include that you do not combine shipping in your listing.

You know this and can understand the backlash.

EBAY used to be a sellers paradise, now it is a crafty buyers realm in which sellers have to angle to avoid issues.

I think it’s fairly obvious from your reply that you’re a longtime high-level grifter who likely has safety deposit boxes on every continent stuffed with $1 chips. I would put you #2 behind Madoff if I was making an all-time con man list. I’m kind of shocked I haven’t seen you yet on American Greed

I agree. Gone are the glory days. Yes, I could have structured each actions with a $3 starting bid price and free shipping rather than $1 plus $2 shipping, but in either case the buyer is still paying $3 per chip, which was the going rate back in 2003. The buyer could have also asked to cancel the auctions, which I would have agreed to since it would not have cost me anything, but he knew that these chips were worth $3, he still wanted them and paid for them. With eBay's old feedback system he could still give me poor ratings, but since he paid in full and on time I could do nothing. He just was spiteful and took the extra step to bash me in a forum. We both probably learned something from all of that.
