A clip from the film shows Stockton implying that the virus was being used as a form of control or a fear tactic.

The medical field is not to be trusted with blind faith.
It is rooted in how these people form their view of the world. They determine the truth and validity of everything on whether it aligns with the current narrative of their choosen peer group. They themselves don't care for logical consistency of what they believe and use seemingly rational argumentation only to defend their existing believes against outsiders or to deflect from obvious contradictions. This is why their arguments so often only sound rational superficially but are so weak and fragile that they can be hardly what convinced them themselves in the first place. They never come to new insights by a series of logical conclusions but instead try to sense trends to be able to exaggerate them for narcissistic gains among their peers.The medical field is not to be trusted with blind faith.
For these people somebody is smart who can repeat as many of the current talking points as possible, who keeps up quickly with new trends of these talking points and who can come up with seemingly rational justifications for them. If they feel, they are doing well in this game, they perceive themselves as smart and see others who apparently fail to reproduce the talking points or keep up with changes as stupid.
That's also why it is impossible to ever convince anyone of them of anything with logical reasoning or by pointing out obvious contradictions in their narrative.
