    On October 29, the BA.5 variant fell slightly below 50% of all cases, which is the first time since June when that was the case. BQ.1 and closely related BQ1.1 comprised almost 25% of cases.

    Despite several other variants being out there (BA.4.6, BF.7, BA5.2.6, etc) being out there, all of them are direct descendants of BA.5, aside from BA.4.6, which came from BA.4. This includes BQ.1 and BQ1.1.

    My point is that, almost 5 months after BA.4/5 took over, we have not seen a major departure from those two, even as BA.5 itself has fallen under 50%, and even as BA.4 itself is almost gone.

    The practical, real-world expectations from this are:

    1) Less of a chance you are susceptible to reinfection if you've had COVID since mid-June

    2) More likelihood the new "bivalent" vaccine will work against the present (and near future) variants

    3) The "severe disease" profile of the disease will remain mostly unchanged. The almost nonexistent under-65 death rate (without major preexisting conditions) will continue, and the hospitalization/death rate of elderly people should stay around where it is now



    I will say that I know a few people who are getting COVID repeatedly in 2022, sometimes less than a month after recovering. I am not sure how to explain this, other than perhaps some people are not maintaining quality antibodies for very long. I will say that I had massive, long-term, in-your-face exposure to Benjamin and his mom when they had it in late July, and I did not get reinfected. I also have not caught it again despite spending a lot of time in live cardrooms since.
