    Hey Les, who hurt you?
It just so happens that I'm coming to terms with this.
You don't want to believe some of it.
But in the long term it must be dealt with.

So shit's about to hit the fan. And no turning back
    Nothing pretty

Otherwise, you day waaaaaaaaaay better to wait after final payment date passes, and then price watch until you see the inevitable cabin-dump at a huge discount.

I've gotten tremendous bargains this way.

Not criticizing you, because Thanksgiving is one of those weeks where they rarely discount it late (due to the popularity), but typically you need to treat cruises the opposite of how you treat airlines, where booking early is NOT better.

I once had this debate with people on a cruise forum, where all the olds were trying to insist that they were smart to book early, and when I pointed out how that was incorrect, they got very angry and were in denial that they were getting shit value. I almost felt bad.

Anyway, I don't understand what you mean by "lock in price in exchange for a discount". Unless things have changed since I last booked Princess, the price is NEVER "locked" until after final payment date, which I think is 90 days out. It's locked for you, but the customer can always cancel with zero penalty prior to that. For that reason, they also don't like discounting much until after that date passes.

What you might see is an offer for a cheap upgrade when people cancel cabins better than yours due to coronavirus fears.

That's what's going on right now with Norwegian. People are cancelling with that new 2-day window, Norwegian is quickly upgrading existing cruise bookings (they have a bidding process where they automatically give it to the highest bidder when it becomes available), and then they only have insides remaining, which they are selling at a tremendous discount.

Todd we have talked cruises a few times. And yes, you are 100% right about booking ahead except high demand weeks/itineraries. Thanksgiving week is notorious for locals near ports to take as kids are out of
School and parents are off and looking for something to do (true for us anyway). I could see “olds” trying to argue on timing because most hardcore cruse people will only do more exotic itineraries and not the standard carabean loops. My parents have been trying to get back on the Nordic Fjord loop for 7 years but every year it keeps going up in price. It’s to the point where I’m shocked they haven’t added another boat to the region. You want to do a generic east Carib cruise in the winter..... wait for Black Friday, they give them away.

Now as far as Corona goes its a game changer. I think they may actualy tell cruise lines to shut down for a month soon. I really don’t think that is far fetched. At that point the cruise lines will be looking for cash. At that point I think they call around looking for folks who are willing to lock in a low price for a non refundable deposit or prepayment. This is speculative on my part but I can see it happening easily esp for early fall US based cruises.

    .
The "olds" I was arguing with weren't just taking rare/exotic or holiday-week cruises. They stated that they "always book early to lock in the best price" and really believed they were getting great deals. When I finally debated them into a corner and sufficiently convinced people that, in most cases, the early bird gets the worst deal, they shifted to other weak justifications such as, "Well, we always get the room we want because nothing's taken yet, and that's important to us."

But there's a lot of dummies on those cruise forums. I had another argument with people who insisted that trip insurance is always +EV for everyone, and 100% of the people posting in the thread claimed they were ahead lifetime on trip insurance. Even when I pointed out that trip insurance has some of the highest profit margins in the insurance industry, they kept trotting out platitudes like, "Trip insurance seems like a waste until you need it!"

And then of course there was the tipping debate, where I explained how the auto-tip is being pocketed by the cruise lines, and nobody wanted to believe it because it would mean they hadn't been tipping anyone! Even when I posted very strong circumstantial evidence of this, about 90% of the people didn't believe me, because they didn't want to.

I do agree with you that the US might simply shut down the cruise industry in this country for awhile. That seems to be where the greatest danger lies in the spread of the coronavirus. Probably better for the government to shut down cruises than to shut down something like Coachella or the WSOP.

However, I disagree that there will be any "lock in a nonrefundable cruise" deal offered. If anything, they're going the other way recently -- relaxing refund/credit policies so people won't be afraid to book.

Wow, you can get Yes at -161 when it was just -1200 recently with Timex personally.

Anyone who took those same odds on the NO side can lock up a big profit now if they want.

Jamaica is bracing for a complete shutdown of the cruise industry: http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/l...ntire-industry

Apparently Jamaica is also demanding a lot of info about passengers disembarking at their ports, and cruise lines are balking at it. Carnival has threatened to stop coming to Jamaica if they don't back down.

There are a number of ports which depend largely upon cruise ship stops for income.

True, but you only lose both if the WSOP starts and then gets shut down by early July.

Actually don’t know if this is just NY but I’m told

Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Spotify HQ all WFH (work from home) til end of month

My kid just got a job in Manhattan for a largely Amazon funded start up. They just told her she is free to work from home permanently.

She is going to take the Manhattan salary, put her stuff in her backpack and bail NYC for good. Apt leases are pretty liquid..... or were.

She doesn’t know that the endless rounds of start up money was just a thing. Don’t have the heart to tell her. She wouldn’t listen anyway.

Congressman Doug Collins from GA has self-quarantined for 14 days after coming in contact with someone with Coronavirus. He was just with Trump at CDC on Friday.
