The "olds" I was arguing with weren't just taking rare/exotic or holiday-week cruises. They stated that they "always book early to lock in the best price" and really believed they were getting great deals. When I finally debated them into a corner and sufficiently convinced people that, in most cases, the early bird gets the worst deal, they shifted to other weak justifications such as, "Well, we always get the room we want because nothing's taken yet, and that's important to us."
But there's a lot of dummies on those cruise forums. I had another argument with people who insisted that trip insurance is always +EV for everyone, and 100% of the people posting in the thread claimed they were ahead lifetime on trip insurance. Even when I pointed out that trip insurance has some of the highest profit margins in the insurance industry, they kept trotting out platitudes like, "Trip insurance seems like a waste until you need it!"
And then of course there was the tipping debate, where I explained how the auto-tip is being pocketed by the cruise lines, and nobody wanted to believe it because it would mean they hadn't been tipping anyone! Even when I posted very strong circumstantial evidence of this, about 90% of the people didn't believe me, because they didn't want to.
I do agree with you that the US might simply shut down the cruise industry in this country for awhile. That seems to be where the greatest danger lies in the spread of the coronavirus. Probably better for the government to shut down cruises than to shut down something like Coachella or the WSOP.
However, I disagree that there will be any "lock in a nonrefundable cruise" deal offered. If anything, they're going the other way recently -- relaxing refund/credit policies so people won't be afraid to book.
Wow, you can get Yes at -161 when it was just -1200 recently with Timex personally.
Anyone who took those same odds on the NO side can lock up a big profit now if they want.
Jamaica is bracing for a complete shutdown of the cruise industry: http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/l...ntire-industry

Apparently Jamaica is also demanding a lot of info about passengers disembarking at their ports, and cruise lines are balking at it. Carnival has threatened to stop coming to Jamaica if they don't back down.
There are a number of ports which depend largely upon cruise ship stops for income.

Actually don’t know if this is just NY but I’m told
Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Spotify HQ all WFH (work from home) til end of month
My kid just got a job in Manhattan for a largely Amazon funded start up. They just told her she is free to work from home permanently.
She is going to take the Manhattan salary, put her stuff in her backpack and bail NYC for good. Apt leases are pretty liquid..... or were.
She doesn’t know that the endless rounds of start up money was just a thing. Don’t have the heart to tell her. She wouldn’t listen anyway.
Yes, my wife told to work from home tomorrow and Thursday. Im in an epicenter , westchester county ny, hitting villages all around me, stay safe everyone

Congressman Doug Collins from GA has self-quarantined for 14 days after coming in contact with someone with Coronavirus. He was just with Trump at CDC on Friday.
