Don't know about other states, but in California that's not true. This is one of the big myths of unemployment insurance. Many people fail to get approved because they lie in order to hide their fault in getting fired, and those lies end up being their undoing.

I have advised various friends (including Master Scalir) the exact correct things to say during the unemployment phone interview, and I'm batting 1.000 in them getting approved. (This was all before the COVID-19 thing.)

In California, the basic standard is that you can't have left voluntarily, and you can't have intentionally induced firing.

    So, here are some hypotehticals:

    Laid off - APPROVED

    Quit - DENIED

Stopped showing up for work - DENIED

Told boss "Suck my dick, you pathetic loser" for no reason - DENIED

Couldn't handle the work / incompetent - APPROVED

Couldn't get along with co-workers the entire time - APPROVED

Ongoing lateness or spotty attendance record - APPROVED

As you can see, sudden actions getting yourself fired (no-showing for work, creating a disturbance) are seen as a form of quitting, and get denied. Ongoing problems are considered "fired for cause but not intentionally ending employment", and get approved.

I'll give you two examples from people I know in real life.

"Kevin" had a history at a particular job calling in sick frequently and showing up late. However, Kevin did a good job when he was there, so they tolerated this behavior for 18 months. Finally, one day they warned Kevin that if this continued, he'd be fired. Kevin continued showing up late, and they fired him. I told Kevin to ADMIT he was routinely missing work and showing up late, but that he did this for ALL 18 MONTHS he was there, and thought they were wiling to tolerate it because he did a good job. Kevin was very hesitant to say this, but he reluctantly did, because I kept insisting it was correct. The UI agent checked with Kevin's work if it was true that this behavior went on for 18 months. When they said yes, he was approved!

"Randy" had a tougher situation. He had trouble with an obnoxious co-worker, and one day he snapped and called her the N-word. He was obviously insta-fired. I asked Randy to tell me the full story. He said that she was constantly harassing him and calling him names, and he finally couldn't take it anymore. I asked if he ever also instigated with her, and he reluctantly admitted to me that, yes, he had. This left him in a pretty bad spot. Then I asked him if she ever had used an epithet against him. He said that, yes, she had called him a "kike", and had done so on more than one occasion. I asked if this was before the N-word incident, and he said yes, but on different days. I asked if others heard her do that, and he said yes. I told him to ADMIT to the UI agent that he called her the N-word, but that he "snapped" after being subjected to a constant barrage of anti-Semitic language from her (and to name the witnesses to it). The UI agent called the employer and asked if it was possible that woman had called Randy a "kike" before, and the employer sheepishly admitted that he wouldn't be surprised if that were true. Randy's unemployment was APPROVED.
Druff, it's ok to admit you're Randy.

Unemployment is dramatically different depending on states. Living on the border and working in both Ohio and Pa, and having to instruct people in the two states, I was shocked how much lower the bar was in Pa. Looking at it real quickly, it’s still that way in Pa. A 19 year old making $9/ hr part time for 15 hours a week who got put out of work will make about $800 a week for the next 4 months. In Ohio, you pretty much would need to be a full time worker at that same wage and job to qualify and there’s a few other hurdles that Pa doesn’t have.

I was actually kind of surprised that the GOP didn’t fight that a little more. In general, where the taxes are much higher the bar for unemployment is generally much lower. More blue states. A disproportionate amount of the $ will go to blue states given the caveat that you have to qualify first through your state to access the larger amount from the fed to my understanding.

I mean if you’re a kid who was working part time in some non-essential store, they basically gave you 4 months off and $10k if you live in Pa. I thought how unlucky fast food workers and other low wage workers were compared to low wage workers working at a clothing store. It seems the low wage workers risking their health to serve the public got fucked. I’ve been tipping people I’ve never tipped the last week because I legit feel bad they have to keep working the counter when I grab a coffee or buy some small item.

Right now he's saying restrictions should be lifted by Easter. There's no way to know if that's scientifically warranted, and it likely is not. Knowing what we know now, if he tells people to go back to normal life before Easter, he's killing people.

Fortunately, it will be mostly his supporters who listen and do it.
Isn't your wife/girlfriend/sig-other moaning about having their hair dresser/manicure shop closed? The White House is probably flooded with angry emails about just that. Safety is one thing, but a woman's appearance always takes priority. Even in the worst of times, a woman will spend on her beauty products/services.

It is possible that “Druff the denier” of most harsh realities is also discounting the seriousness of present events? In which case, we don’t really need a Winston Churchill. Trump will do.

    It is within his range.

For instance, does he liken this more to 2008 or WWII/depression.

Never mind. Trump said Easter. It’ll be all DOW 30,000 and Dodger baseball soon.

Druff furiously checking his Facebook group for a response.

We agreed last week as a family to support Trump, under the orders of my old man. I called him today and told him i'm out.
My dad hates him as well but is trying to get behind the man in charge of my families safety as well as the safety of every American.
Which is usually what you would do as an american during war or crisis.

In Canada we have retired doctors applying to get their medical license re-instated so they can put themselves in direct danger to help even though they obviously fall into 1 of the higher risk groups.

    https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canad...id=mailsignout

In this thread we have a supposed American healthcare worker telling everybody to totally stop donating blood. Not telling us things to look out for to try to make it safer or perhaps saying if you're in 1 of the high risk groups for severe Covid-19 you should maybe re-think it but actually straight up saying NOBODY should give blood even though it is needed & will always be needed or people will die.

Full disclosure: my late mother was a RN, as well as 6 other aunts, & I have a tough time reconciling a healthcare worker saying something with no facts to back it up, & just fearmongering. This is the reason I likened it to uninformed celebs telling people not to take a vaccine because it causes autism.

I think the kid who grew up online - before online was even a thing - has had his mouth wide open and swallowed a firehose of right wing infotainment for years.

It’s like a 12 year old with the Pornhub Gold account and 12 hours a day to study.

Neither is going to turn out with a healthy perspective.

He needs to turn that right wing social media porn off.

It’s ok to hate both sides Druff

You sound like a real pansy. First you hate Trump, then your Dad tells you what to think and you agree, then you call him groveling saying you changed your mind. If you ever were in the business world you would last like a week. If anyone told me what to think I would tell them to fuck off.

Well Governor Newsom, during the outbreak you need to suspend the charge for plastic bags at the grocery...State of Washington has, California needs to follow suit

Just heard from my daughter in law their local Von's will not bag your groceries if you bring your own bags as the state encourages (environmental law in effect for a couple of years now)

the employees are afraid of getting sick...so if you bring your own bags, you sack your own groceries...but they will bag your groceries if you buy new bags from them at the standard charge of $.10 per bag...

but there is a problem, many stores weren't prepared for the surge in business plus the increased bag usage due to the non-bagging policy...hence the stores under-ordered bags...so if you shop at a store like that, the customer winds up using their own bag and bagging their groceries, no other option--the check out lines are really slow as a result because people not experienced at bagging are forced to do it for themselves...and of course, customers remain close to each other for longer periods of time while waiting to check out, so the risk of transmission increased...

Governor, suspend the bag charge for now.

funny, while the store employees refuse to touch your grocery bags, they will handle you currency without objection.

Not from a "feeling" they have but hard facts on paper. Obama failed, he did it with the most eloquent of speech, dignity and grace but he failed. at best par for the course.
Not sure why you brought up Obama, I’m Republican that doesn’t care for Trump. I’m not gonna blindly get behind a crazy person just because we share the same political party. I agree some good things have happen with Trump in office. Do you agree that maybe some of those good things were going to happen anyway? For example, the economy was already going up when he came into office and continued. Probably would have irregardless of the president. The best thing I can think of that Trump has been is getting Mexico to start policing its own border.

it really is extremely difficult to fully comprehend the scope of trump's habitual incompetence.

Its ok to be critical of Trump, I am not saying I am not the same way in certain areas, no one is perfect.

The level at which you and I see a real threat to National security just differs and personally an egomaniac or not he's still better than most every other one we've lived to see. If Trump is going to screw up or get dirty he tells you, better than the polished back stabbing self serving politician we had before and before that and before that and before that.
