The government is likely to issue guidance regarding the use of industrial N95 respirators in a healthcare setting very soon. This will free up a lot of stock that wasn't available to front line workers. 3M allegedly got bitchslapped for their lack of response to this crisis.

The private vs socialised care argument here is useless. The only difference will be if Americans are asked to pay out of pocket for the care. That’s it.

The truth of the matter is - in all countries, with all different range of healthcare systems - nobody was prepared for this. Nobody could be. No country hoards so many masks. No country runs with a huge surplus of beds and doctors because it makes no sense economically. No change in medical system would fix this.

And for what it’s worth, Italy has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. None of their problems can be attributed to their healthcare system - it’s lack of long term foresight and basic economics. The same thing that is fucking the US up the ass right now.

Wow, since Trump closed down the pandemic department, Druff just put the blame square on Trump's back.

No one is sayng health care could've done ANYTHING more for Corona,
Its the people who were saying they dont want their taxes to go up for healtcare due to their great their employers insurance, or whatever, are finding out now, that can just end one day.

Plus, after this, you want people preparing your food, Cleaning your house, picking your fruit/vegetables to not have affordable healthcare?
Just selfish at this point, like it or not, we are all in this together,

I ran the White House pandemic office. Trump closed it.

The entire argument of, "This is why we need socialized medicine" is so bizarre, because availability of rapid care has NEVER been a strength of socialized systems. They are notoriously plagued by waiting lists and unavailability of tests/procedures. Many consider this an acceptable tradeoff to get everyone covered for "free", but it's absurd how some are now claiming this weakness doesn't exist, and is actually a strength.

Comparing death rates isn't an accurate way to assess things, anyway, because there are so many variables contributing to that.

The truth is that any system (socialized or privatized), which had a massive number of empty hospital beds and unused equipment for all of this time, would have been incredibly wasteful.

It's very reasonable that hospitals initially didn't have the room to care for a mass number of people infected by this.

It's unreasonable that some countries (including the US) didn't spring into action immediately and work diligently to rectify this before things got really bad. But as I said, that's a failure of government, not the healthcare system.

Hate to tell you, Jimmy, but the addition of a pandemic office wouldn't have helped much here. This is a new level we hadn't seen yet. Nobody was prepared for this, and a government office wouldn't have been ready to spring into the action needed.

The office was created only recently, after Obama somewhat botched the Ebola situation -- which few remember because Ebola doesn't spread easily, and thus never became a huge deal. During the time it was open, it had not put anything in place which we would have needed here.

I'm not saying closing it was the right decision, but many on the left are pointing to it, as if closing the office is the main reason we are suffering today.

i mean, you're probably right, but we have no idea. the whole reason you don't fire a pandemic office is so you don't look like one of the worst presidents of all time when a pandemic hits.

Yeah this guy makes good videos.

I've heard for years that Vitamin C helps the immune system, but that's been unproven. My experience of taking 750mg right when early cold symptoms hit has been fairly good -- many times it falls off and dies within 1-2 days.

Wonder if I should start doing that again.

Can I get some cliffs on the ebola thing? I didn't follow it that closely at the time.

Did some quick research: some Americans went over there to help contain it, and then when they came back 2 of them tested positive a while late. 1 of them recovered, the other died after he infected 2 nurses, who both recovered. And Obama decided not to ban travel, I assume so that health workers could go over there and stop it on the ground.

Is the Obama criticism based on not banning travel? Allowing potentially infected people to come back home, or going in the first place?

    Am I missing something?

Shooting and isolating the infected are steps Druff’s fine medical system won’t take. Thus, projections in NYC and elsewhere are routinely flawed overly optimistic

I started drinking 2 bottles of Minute Maid orange juice almost every day from 2002-2010(it was free while I was in camp & I started to keep it up while I was home) & never got so much as a cold until early 2011. I tried to get back onto this after this bout where I got diagnosed with asthma in 2011, but it didn't seem to help anymore.

I've had 3 bouts, where I was bedridden at home for a week, during the last 2 years & my wife was convinced I had pneumonia all 3 times even though I was back drinking lots of orange juice.

Maybe the original streak from 2002 to 2010 was the placebo effect as mumbles suggests but I don't think it was just a coincidence.

I used to drink orange juice just cause I liked it with breakfast. Quit that a couple years ago. Sugar and acid I can do without.

Guests will stay over and I am reminded what a staple that is for rest of world at breakfast. Otherwise it’s completely forgotten

    Regarding Vitamin C:

I think this is one of those things where the research is poor, and there's actually something to it, but it hasn't been proven yet.

I average about 4 colds per year, which is on the upper end of normal. My colds typically have a wide variance in how severe they are and how long they last. The very worst ones have major symptoms for over 2 weeks, and I'm hit with sore throat, heavy congestion, fatigue, muscle aches, and a cough. The medium ones have major symptoms for about 5-7 days, and carry those same symptoms, but to a lesser severity. The light ones start out as a sore throat and some congestion, but vanish within completely 48 hours.

I have found that taking 750mg of Vitamin C has decreased the number of bad and medium colds I get, and turns about half of them into the minor/quick variety. This doesn't work every time -- but I've definitely noticed a difference.

This isn't a placebo. These are real physical symptoms which simply don't develop.

With that said, I did have minor/quick colds before I started with the Vitamin C, so I could just be running well and my body is fighting more of them off than before.

Still, if I had to guess, I would say that the Vitamin C is helping.

This reminds me a bit of the acne "myths" I read about in the early '90s. I read "credible" articles stating that research has proven that chocolate doesn't make acne worse, and things like sunlight, dry air, and dry soap doesn't make it better.

    To that, I say, "Bullshit!"

Whenever I ate lot of chocolate in those years, I developed acne. It wasn't the only cause, but it was one cause, to where I really cut down my consumption of chocolate.

And when I'd be in the sun awhile, the acne would rapidly get better. Dry soaps -- usually cheap, crappy ones found in hotels especially -- really helped my acne. And when I visited a dry place like Las Vegas or Mammoth, again, the acne would vanish.

I saw all of this reliably over the years. I realize that each person is different and can have different experiences, but I found that each of these "debunked myths" regarding acne were actually true when it came to me.

I wasn't one of those guys who had a face full of acne constantly, but starting around age 19, I got sporadic outbreaks where I'd get several pimples at once, and I hated it. It took about 7 years to fully get rid of it, though it decreased a lot once I hit 23.

Wasn’t Acutane (acne treatment) scary hyper tweaked vitamin C?

God, I haven’t thought of that in years.

Do they still do Acutane? I remember lawsuits

    Edit
Accutane was derived from Vitamin A. Birth defects

Kids with crazy testosterone or the roid users had acne and wanted to use Accutane but it fucked up your joints while you took it. You couldn’t play.

    Free-associating again. Sorry

BTW the level of Vitamin C in OJ is fairly low. You won't be able to drink enough to get a lot of Vitamin C in your system, though I'm not denying that even twice the recommended daily intake (RDI) might help you. The RDI for Vitamin C is 90mg. To get 180mg, you'd need to drink 24 oz of OJ.

What little research there is on Vitamin C claims that you need high concentrations to really make a difference, but that concentrations too high can cause digestive issues, and super-high dosages could even kill you.

I found 750mg/day (when suspecting illness) to be the sweet spot, at least for me.

1000mg causes diarrhea for me (a common side effect of too much C). I can do 750 with no problem. I take it in pill form. That's like drinking 100 ounces of OJ in a day (without the sugar and calories!)
