Keeping the "emergency" has more to do with policy than the science. For example, without the emergency label there is no legal rationale to keep student loan payments deferred. There is also some possible litigation issues once the emergency status is dropped-- although my understanding is this is something Congress is working on; to make sure no-one who pushed the vaccines/mandates has any legal liability for any harm it has caused.

--From that list I see a lot of older Democratic Senators who want the emergency status dropped, with probably the big reason being they stand to profit in some way (directly or indirectly) from student loan payment being restarted. All the younger, progressive Congresspeople on the other hand probably still have to pay their student loans, and are trying to extend it indefinitely, if not get their loans completely wiped out somehow.
--Me and my wife are doing ok so no-one is feeling sorry for us, but when student loans restart it is going to cost us $1500/month. But our kids our old enough we are getting ready to stop using nannies, which we pay more than that under the table, so counting tax write-offs we should come out slightly ahead.
Although obviously if the loans were magically wiped away it would be a giant financial windfall. But we are in a tax bracket no-one is talking about wiping out our loans anyways.
