Unfortunately, our society is designed where there is large incentives to look at things with a "glass half full" approach, and not prepare contingency plans for the worst. And so-called experts are not immune from these incentives. Experts have been clearly wrong about how serious this is from the very beginning. Cuomo has been an absolute disaster. Still spreading fake news about the effectiveness of masks. There is ZERO reason you should go to the grocery store or wherever without a mask during a viral airborn pandemic, especially in NYC. You shouldn't be allowed in a grocery store or public transit without one.
Instead, NYC actually BANS the use of face masks. It's illegal to wear a face mask in public in NYC. Cuomo hasn't repealed this (though I'm sure it's not being enforced). And MTA workers were explicitly forbidden from wearing masks while at work, while all this was going down.
