23 1/2 years ago, 19-year-old Kristin Smart vanished.

She was never found, the case went cold, and she was declared legally dead in 2002. There were no indications that she left voluntarily, because all of her belongings were still in her dorm.

At the time, she had left a frat party en route for her dorm, but never showed up. Some have theorized that, walking alone late at night, she was kidnapped, killed, and the body disposed of, perhaps in the ocean.

However, her family recently revealed that an FBI agent called them, and said the following:

- There will be news very shortly about Kristin -- the type of news they'd never have expected.

- The news will come within a month.

- They should get a family spokesman ready, and should get away for awhile.

What?!

Then it turned out that this wasn't an official call from the FBI, but rather a call from an ex-agent. However, the FBI stopped short of denying that something has changed recently, and would not comment if an announcement was pending.

The FBI did confirm that the person who called them was legitimately an ex-agent.

Is it possible that this ex-agent heard through former colleagues about the upcoming announcement, and compassionately wanted to warn the family?

Or is it possible the guy is just a crackpot, hence why he's an ex-agent?

Here's an article about it: https://www.sfgate.com/crime/article...t-14998562.php

Given the ex-agent's warnings, we can rule out a few things, if he is to be believed.

It's unlikely Kristin Smart was murdered, because that wouldn't require a family spokesman or for her parents to hide out for awhile, nor would it be unexpected.

It's semi-unlikely that the story is simply that Kristin ran away and started a new life. While this would be an interesting (and pleasant) discovery over 23 years later, it wouldn't require the family to "go away for awhile". If anything, they would be receiving sympathy. (However, it's possible the warning to "go away" was to avoid the ensuing media frenzy.)

Is it possible that Kristin started a new life as a criminal and is now wanted for some heinous crimes? Or perhaps that she was kidnapped and eventually joined up with her kidnappers to commit crimes, Patty Hearst style?

Very weird story. Now I really want to know the announcement.

Kristin would now be 42 years old.
