    Off the banana boat

So my dad moved in with us , we are taking good care of him. At 89 he is mostly alert and his thinking is on track. We have 2 and a half bathrooms so we are adding a stand up shower in downstairs bathroom. We are painting one bedroom and the hallway which needs to remove wall papering and then be painted. The bedroom is an average size room. The guy brought his wife also. As we walked downstairs he gave his wife a knowing squeeze on her elbow. So then after he surveyed everything he started with 3 fifty then said 3500. The hallway he said would cost 6500. He was really pushy saying he needed to know right there when he could start and if we could pay cash.

Thought it was unprofessional that he brought his wife plus was really pushy and spoke glowing of his fine quality work. I had to use my poker face when he rattled 3500 for one room. Obviously going to get a couple of more appraisals from neighborhood friends who had stuff done. I didn't get price of bathroom add on yet. I checked by doing a search on him didn't find anything except non visited face book page.

Yeah, don’t hire that guy. Decent chance he just bolts with your $ or is incompetent. His numbers could be correct, but what you described feels unprofessional.

Had a friend hire a guy do her driveway with that exact approach. He basically just stole her money and was impervious to civil suits. Had nothing on paper or in banks to grab.

$6500 should get you a fully remodeled bathroom from floor to ceiling. I wouldn't even mention that pricing to the other contractors as they might undercut it to beat it but still rip you off.

Lolz he is Mexican and it is in usd$ The hallway is really high and has to take down all the wall paper and repaint so that is a big job. No way 3500 for an avg sized bedroom. Wifes friend has contractor who charges 250 a day. Very satisfied with him, he is coming at 7:15 am tomorrow to appraise.Work needs to be done asap. Its his side job he only does it on weekends and she was very satisfied with his work. I did have 2 bathrooms remodeled was 12 k. Didn't shop around with the bathrooms , they did a nice job. This guy that came today seems like he will be banging on our door to follow up and try to pressure into giving him the job.

When I did the bathroom remodeling just checked their ratings and they had 5 of 5 stars. Oh and our mexican friend wants us to pay for all the paint as well.

Not sure how old you are, but you're probably not too young if your dad is 89.

A lot of times there's a temptation to take advantage of older people, and you'll see shit like this happening. And when I say older people, I mean anyone over 60, not just people your dad's age (who REALLY get taken advantage of).

If you're over 60 yourself, the dude may have seen the whole scene there, thought, "LOL old people", and tried to fool you into thinking it was a reasonable price.

Businesses (especially commission-based ones) try to pull shenanigans on my parents sometimes, who are in their mid-70s, but my parents are as sharp as they always were, so they don't fall for anything.

A bit of a tangent, but I found that the age I'm at now is actually ideal regarding dealing with businesses. When I was younger, I found that I got zero respect and they always talked down to me. That vanished as I got older.

At the same time, I'm not old enough yet to where I will be targeted for scams and hustles because of being perceived as elderly, nor am I dismissed as a cantankerous old man.

Similarly, when looking for a doctor, my ideal age range is +-10 years of my current age. Younger than that and I'm afraid of inexperience, older than that and I'm afraid of old-school treatments and/or decline in mental sharpness.

Im 57 older then dirt, wife was there too she is 47. Live in an affluent area , so my opinion is the guy got greedy. My dad had me relatively late (33) I had my son really late at 43 or so. I feel it was a good move to have my son late , I have incredible patience. My dad was really strict, my son does whatever he wants does not need much parenting as he is a really great kid.

Most of the time it’s my idiot neighbors driving up the cost of stuff...especially if they are transplants from Cali or NY.

    WTF? RUN AWAY

I would tell this guy to GET FUCKED

Then I would proceed to write every review humanly possible to let everyone know what a fraud this guy is and take him down.

See, there are high estimates, and then there is this guy. I dont care how expensive the neighborhood, this is a straight up scam attempt; nobody will convince me otherwise

Ah, affluent area is probably the key here.

Yeah, that's a big problem. A lot of contractors and other service people see a rich area and figure that money is no object, and they can gouge people.

I deal with this crap myself. Get all kinds of high quotes for things, and then I have to make the decision between hiring a known competent but overly expensive guy or a less-known-but-cheaper guy. Usually I find someone who is at least semi-reasonable but it's a pain in the ass.

In the Bay Area, it's even worse, for obvious reasons.

I had my son late, too, though a bit earlier than you. I was 38 1/2 when Ben was bored. There are good and bad parts to it. Good to have more maturity but I also have less energy than I did 10 years ago.

Update: no shower included. 11k for painting a normal size bedroom, and hallway. I was defo getting rolled. Had a guy come in today at 7:15 told us 200 a day . Did very good work for neighbors . He is 60 and works on weekends as side job It will take him 2 days for the bedroom and 3 to 4 days for the hallway. Total cost 900ish as opposed to 11k plus. 3500 for a bedroom.

I don’t want to defend this guy because the quote was obviously a joke, but this was probably his way of saying “I don’t want this job”. The economy being what it is he probably has a lot of work and realized the wallpaper and high ceilings wasn’t worth his time.

Thats a good read, but he was begging my wife for the job. When can we start? I need half the money up front and other lol comments. He wanted that job, telling us he is worth the money , is expensive and his customers love him and he would do a great job. We where laughing at him.

The painter called wife today and tried to pressure her to hire him. I will do a good job etc. He also wanted to know how much we gut the guy we hired for. Dude must be snorting glue. He told my wife he will bring his tool box and he would work circles around the other painters, hes just that good.
Last edited by FRANKRIZZO; 01-16-2020 at 07:02 AM. Reason: tool box and working circles around other painters did not happen but everything else is shockingly true
