Dare I ask the occasion for smoking this turkey?

It's too late for Thanksgiving, and too early for Christmas.

Looks like Sacajawea finally got the hell out of there but this could easily be a Chris Benoit situation.

But from now on I refuse to take set ups for Gordman really really hates his wife when she acts like a Navajo jokes but this man smoked a Turkey for the first time ever at his house so he deserves an appearance by me in his thread.

I'm more interested in the stogie. Gave up cigarettes a year ago but I like the idea of a cigar. Beyond that, the smell of pipe tobacco is one I love as some of my relatives always had it on the go when I was a kid. Old cigarette smoke is awful indoors. Not sure about cigars but pipe tobacco leaves a nice smell

Gordman: I cant remember the name of the stogie as I discarded the label (I'll try to find out). I don't smoke cigarettes but occasionally I enjoy a good cigar with a cocktail.

I don't know where my head was. I've committed blasphemy and this is inexcusable. My only defense is that it was very late and I was a few cocktails in when I made this thread.

I had another bird that I bought pretty cheap a couple weeks back and decided to go ahead and do something with it rather than keep it in the freezer. I submerged it in a brine for a few days and here I am

No special occasion on this one. I just got into one of my moods of wanting to smoke something good on the grill.

For me, there is something about that cold crisp air this time of year that makes me want to sit outside and enjoy it for a period of time - whether it be doing something like this on the grill, or even ice fishing or hunting.

Also, I'm pretty picky and critical of myself when I cook, but I gotta say that this bird turned out spectacular and above my expectations. It was moist and juicy, not too salty, and pleasantly flavorful throughout the entire bird.

It's pretty hard to fuck up a turkey and no way would I spend
valuable socializing time to tend over a fucking piece of
meat we'll be shitting out in a day or two..

Just out of high school I got a mill job in the interior
of the province. Good money, shit job and I rented an old leaning
house with four other 19 -20 year olds. Sounded like a good idea
    at the time.

Anywho the company gave every employee a frozen turkey for
Christmas. The problem for us was we had an fridge as old as
the house and the freezer had never been defrosted.

We could barely fit a beer in the freezer let alone a turkey.
Problem two, first time living on our own and no one knew
hot to cook toast. But we were facing throwing out a few
nice birds. So in between walks from the front room to the fridge
we glanced at the oven occasionally
The smart one in the group said to put tinfoil on top of the bird so we did.
    Fucking delicious.

Woah wait a minute here ...

    1) Sure, popping a basic turkey in a conventional oven is easy...I'll give you that.

Prepping and putting a turkey on a smoker (or even on a regular grill) is a little more challenging and a lot easier to fuck up - especially when you're not using a fancy smoker with the bells and whistles. You have to make sure the temp is correct (especially for a turkey), your smoke is good (light blue smoke), and many other things including even that brine you soaked it in for a couple of days before you started smoking it.

If you're wondering why I would go through all of that, the answers are simple: it imparts much more flavor into the bird, and personally I like the task and challenge of cooking something good low and slow; this brings me to point #2

    2) While I smoked this particular bird at an odd time of night and by myself (for most of it), in general, smoking something on the grill when people are over is quite literally PART of the "valuable socializing time" you speak of. There is nothing like firing up the smoker and then grabbing a few beers to pass around to everyone while kicking back on the deck shooting the shit with one another; a side bonus is that sweet sweet smell that you get to take in while waiting.
