Injured Arizona Cardinals player Josh Shaw suspended for betting against own team

    https://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/i...cardinals-game

    How dumb is this guy?

He's been injured the entire season, but he was at Caesars on November 10, and bet on a parlay which included one against his own team.

While it appears he wasn't using inside information to make the bet (which would be of limited advantage in a parlay anyway), this was clearly against league policy, yet he did nothing to hide it.

He placed the bet himself, and when he signed up for a "betting account" (presumably the ability to bet via app), he put his profession as "professional football player".

It's almost like the idiot just didn't realize it.

Caesars reported him, as required by Nevada law.

He made a bet that day on the Tampa Bay game against the Cardinals, at halftime.

It's not clear how much he bet.

That is actually the most likely scenario.

Also, for clarification he signed with the team, got "hurt" in the offseason, and never played a single play with them. I am guessing behind the scenes him/the team decided, possibly before the season ever started, that he was never going to be part of this team and he hasn't spent one second with the team this season, and possibly ever. And they haven't officially cut him yet due to contract/salary cap issues. There is actually a chance he isn't even hurt and again designating him as hurt is part of some complicated salary cap/league rule.

I wouldn't be surprised if, in his mind at least, he assumed he wasn't actually contractually obligated by the league non-gambling rules, as he isn't going to play at all this year. There is also a non zero chance he already decided he was never going to play another down of football in the NFL and just doesn't care.

This is the same dude who, while at college at USC, jumped off a 2nd floor balcony and sprained both his ankles. He then told the team that his nephew was drowning in the pool and he jumped to get down there to save him.

In reality, the cops were called on his apt due to him arguing loudly with his girlfriend, and he was running away.

The Bengals (because of course, the Bengals) drafted him in the 4th round.

So what is the alternative? He did know and did it anyway?
Its like Druff had a revelation in real time, but didn't want it to ruin his rant about how dumb the guy is for not being born knowing as much as Druff does about gambling.

No excuse for this. Every league drills it into their players about staying on the right side of their betting restrictions.

Team cant cut him while under contact unless and until an injury settlement is reached with a player whos on IR per the CBA between the NFLPA and the NFL/Owners.. The suspension basically makes it a null and void issue they don't have to pay his ass while he's suspended anyway but I believe his contract is up anyway so basically they stopped paying him starting this week due to the suspension.. Technically while he may feel like he wasn't going to play again he was still subject to the league rules as he was under contract until end of the league year..
