It has been announced that Bobby Baldwin, champion of the 1978 WSOP Main Event, will be director of gaming for The Drew, a hotel being built on the north end of the strip.

The Drew sits on the former site of the El Rancho. It was originally going to be Fountainebleu in the late 2000s, but the project ran into financial issues during the 2008 real estate crash, and construction stopped, leaving an unfinished building sitting for years. Eventually after various ownership changes, construction began again, with it being slated to be called "The Drew", named after the owner's son who died at age 22 of an Oxycontin overdose.

It still won't open until early 2022.

The Drew and Resorts World, and perhaps a renovated Circus Circus under new ownership, are expected to bring new life to the has-been north strip. At the moment, Wynn/Encore is considered the only decent property in that area, and that borders on being center strip.

Baldwin abruptly left his high-level positions at MGM Resorts in October 2018, under mysterious circumstances.

Some also blamed him for the situation at the Aria poker room, where "private games" were run against the spirit of Nevada law. There were rumors that Baldwin himself had commanded the games to be run that way, but this was never verified.
