Al Alvarez dies at 90; Wrote poker book "The Biggest Game in Town"

    Highly recommended read.

It was considered the best book ever written on poker by players and critics from the 80s and 90s, "The Biggest Game in Town" delves into the seedy, obsessive world of high-stakes Vegas poker back in the day. Set over the course of the main event, The Biggest Game in Town is both the first ever written chronicle of the World Series of Poker and a portrait of the hustlers, madmen, and geniuses who were around at the time.

God, poker was so much better back before we had all these internet whizz kids trying to make poker a “legitimate sport.” I miss the days when you told people you were a poker player and they winced a little bit. For some reason people thought you were a degenerate if you played in cardrooms. Imagine that.

I can’t ignore this thread and pretend that I didn’t read the book. Wouldn’t be honest.

I went to the library and sitting on the shelf next to the dusty ”Scarne on Cards” was Alvarez. Internet is barely a thing and poker was undiscovered.

He described a completely foreign universe. He did it with poetry.

It was a magical time. You can never go back. We may never see a moment like that again. Info is so easy to get now but back then it wasn’t. Alverez was one of only a few to describe this world.

    RIP
