The extreme categories are the ones the media preys on because they're easily brainwashed. The extreme typically aren't very smart thus can be talked into anything and once they have been they never can consider anything else. They're very intolerant of anyone else's POV and really have no interest into moving things forward. They want to be "right" and like the conflict that division brings. The extreme people on both sides don't have the ability to ever admitting anyone on their side ever does anything wrong which only adds to the division.
The average to moderate ranges actually listen to each other and try to find common ground.
Unfortunately, the extreme categories are much loader than the others which in the modern world creates this narrative that the world is going to shit.
