To Druff's credit, he is more intelligent than this teacher, who thought it was a racial slur.

I guarantee at least one kid knew the teacher didn’t know what he was talking about, I also know that most teachers don’t like when students correct them.

I was never dumb or brave enough to correct my teachers or professors no matter how dumb they sounded.

One pronounced the Greek symbol lamda as lamba and everyone from that point called it lamba which I thought was silly.

There was a similar scandal at my college in 1991, except in this case, it was the teacher who used the word.

A black girl went to a professor's office hours to ask if there were any way to skip purchasing some of the expensive textbooks. The professor answered that they were all necessary, but, "if you want to be niggardly about it, you can always attempt to buy used copies at the student store or at other stores around town."

The girl was shocked, called him a racist, and then reported him.

He tried to repeatedly apologize for his use of the word, and said that he didn't think about its "unfortunate homonym". He was cleared of wrongdoing by the school, but went on to write a letter to the school newspaper against the rise of political correctness, explaining what had happened to him. I wonder how he feels about the way everything is today, which is 100x worse on the political correctness front.

After the 1991 incident at my college, I became fascinated with the ignorance surrounding the word "niggardly".

In 1994, I considered buying up common-word domain names and then selling them later -- an idea few people had at the time -- but passed on it because it was $50 per year per domain, and I didn't feel like putting up all that money, which was a lot to me at the time. Then I felt foolish when some of these sold for small fortunes. Doh!

Sometime around 1997 I thought of the word "niggardly" and was curious if someone had bought that. They hadn't. I figured one day the word would end up in the mainstream news, and the domain might be worth something. So I bought it, and simply placed a dictionary definition of the word as the only content of the domain. I did add "a perfectly respectable word of Norse origin" prior to the definition, a phrase I stole from that professor who wrote to the school newspaper. I bought it under a phony name, simply because there was no way to hide your domain information at the time, and I didn't want to make it public yet who owned it.

Then indeed it happened. In 1999, there was a controversy surrounding the word, involving an aide to the DC mayor, who first resigned over usage of the word, and then retracted his resignation after people convinced him that it was sending the wrong message. At the time, I got e-mail from strangers congratulating me for grabbing the domain years before this controversy (lol), but I never made any attempt to sell it.

Eventually I lost interest in the whole thing, and when it came time to renew it, I let it go.
