    Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

True tale. Loved that song back in the day.

Tried recently and it didn’t age well. Says more about me. He was a poet

Even though he was Candadian, one of Lightfoot's best known songs is about Arizona.

"Carefree Highway" was released in 1974. In 1973, Gordon was driving on Arizona Highway 74, which runs east-west, with Wickenburg on the western end. At the time, the highway was fairly remote, as the greater Phoenix area had not yet expanded to what we see today.

Gordon was driving on the road at night in a rental car, his mind was wandering, and he thought about a girl named Ann he dated when he was 22, in 1961. His mind then drifted to song lyrics about it, which he then pulled over to write down on a notepad. He actually left the lyrics in the car and forgot about them, almost leaving them behind when he returned it. He then left the lyrics in his suitcase for 8 months, before doing anything with it.

The song title came from the actual name of the highway, which he saw while driving.

Carefree Highway made #10 on the Billboard Charts, when it was finally recorded and released in August 1974.

Gordon was an absolute legend. Seen him in concert in 2019. At 80 years old he looked like he'd been through hell and back several dozen times, but was such an incredible warrior. 2 hour concert, he was standing the whole time with no breaks whatsoever. The man was a machine. Sundown is incredibly underrated!. RIP Gordon

Bob Dylan was a student of lyricists and Gordon Lightfoot was one of them. I've had Gordon's Greatest Hits CD for years.
