Will be interesting on how they handle rules on betting on the team in the city. I can only imagine the "hangover" angle for betting on away teams in Vegas (including the fact that half of the arena will be fans from public teams like NYR, BOS, etc traveling there).

Umm 1.9 Million people, now the 29th biggest metro area in the US.
Blackhawks Fans, who cant afford to see a home game in Chicago, would gladly fork over some cash to fly out to Vegas on a Friday night, see a show or two, gamble at the table, and then catch the Blackhawks vs the Las Vegas Negreanus Sunday afternoon, and then fly back right after the game.

Look at the money Bettman poured into Arizona to keep the Coyotes there. Somebody said that half their attendance is snowbirds for other teams. I'm guessing Bettman figures the same. I don't know how well their minor league team did for attendance playing at that Arena at the Orleans though but I cant imagine it was that great. I disagree about the NFL only because its the #1 sport and people can fly in for a game once a week if they cant for example get to see their home team play due to constant sellouts (IE AZ Cardinals, WAS Redskins) and having to pay a ton for scalper/resell tickets when they can fly to Vegas and see them on the road for less and oh yeah gamble it up some too.

Half of them are probably part time residents who are there to gamble. So are the others who live within an hour probably in the "metro area". It is a transient population, and a hockey team or any other sport draws from the people that actually live there, full time. have kids...etc. Not part timers who have a 2nd home there.
You also seem to be leaving out the fact that THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A PRO SPORTS FANBASE. EVER.

think I saw that the franchise fee was going to be $500M, which is many times greater than what Columbus paid ($20-30M, I think)...

Got to hand it to the NHL on this one. Somehow they are running a fourth rate sports show on the verge of collapse for any team north of the Mason Dixon line and they are going to get these dumbasses to cut them a huge check.
These investors should just wait it out and buy a franchise from Arizona/Florida/Columbus etc.
