Doubled my iMac ram from 4 to 8gb

And it's noticeably slower, so much so I took out the extra four I put in and it returned to "normal" function.

    WTF?

Full disclosure, im a complete novice

That being said, did you update the settings in your BIOS? I think you have to do that but im not 100% positive.

Also, is it possible you have malware in your system?

No BIOS cause it's a Mac? Not sure either. Malware I don't think so. It's a new to me used iMac and
the hard drive was wiped securely twice

my guess IF it's 32 bit snow leopard:

it can't utilize more than 4gb ram, so if you removed two 2gb sticks and replaced with 2 4gb sticks you are still using 4gb but only single channel which will be slower than dual channel

No, unfortunately it's not Snow Leopard. I've been trying to get back to SL for a couple of years now and I thought getting another older iMac along with my SL DVD would allow for it, but Apple blocks shit with firmware and OS updates.
I'm running Mavericks and High Sierra on two equal partitions. Come to think of it I didn't try the 8gb on Sierra, just Mavericks so maybe I'll give it another go.
