One of his opponents is Philip Long, from London.
I played a ton of 75-150 O8 with this guy over the past 2 weeks.
Before you say Kessler has aged badly, be aware that he's 57.
He lies about his age for whatever reason, and all that does is end up making him look like he's aging badly when he's actually not.
Despite being 10th all time in number of tournament cashes, with well over 300, Kessler does not have a major (WSOP, WPT, EPT) title.
Yet.
Chainsaw time !
5th place.
Take it down, Chainsaw.
Which probably means his Tourney ROI is insanely low and most likely negative after you factor in all travel expenses. $3,783,243 in cashes is pretty bad for the volume he plays. Biggest win only $276,485 in a $10K stud high/low WSOP event for just 27 X his buyin. He doesn't just play the $500 to $2.5K events, he's got at least one $50K and many $10ks thrown in. That brings his over all profit way down.
Playing tourneys since 2001 and hasn't hit a big one for over $300k. 18 years of tourneys he should of luck boxed his way to a big score. Obv he just goes for the cashes and screws his shots for a huge payday. These tourney donks need a few big binks to make it worth it. Chainsaw is a min cash machine.
2005 his volume picked up so like 14 years of tourney poker. 3,783,243/14 = $270K avg per year in cashes. Take out his buyins, staking payouts, travel, tips, taxes and its not looking good.
He must be crushing the slots and video poker to pay the bills. Does he play cash games too? Maybe he survives on that?
Props to him for playing a game and being able to live off it somehow but it doesn't make sense.

What do you estimate his ROI is?
The old ChainSaw reports
Yeah, I was always under the impression he was like late 40s now. Why did I think that? Does he lie to media outlets? I don’t know why I assumed that was his age, but am surprised at 57. He always struck me as a guy who looks for value everywhere. Did he assume his age would cost him endorsements or something when poker boomed? I can’t think of why a guy would lie unless it was to a girl in a bar or on a dating website or something. That’s strange.
hendon goes back to 2001 and shows his earnings at $3,783,243.
so all said and done he's banking about $200k a year, but in 2018, he spent about $80k on buyins alone.
gotta figure like $3k a month on transportation, rooms, meals... basically he's working for like 90k a year or so.
pre tax.

Where are you getting the $80k on buyins? That seems way low.
There are two theories on Kessler. Maybe both are true.
Theory #1 is that he's an advantage casino player who is also a cheapskate, and makes enough through that to make up for whatever shortfall he might have in poker tournaments.
Theory #2 is that he's from a rich family or has a trust, and uses that to back his tournament hobby.
I have talked to him some about the advantage play stuff, and he does know what he's doing, so he's not just posturing with that stuff. However, I don't hear about him aggressively traveling the country for the opportunities which crop up, which is essential if you're going to make a living at it. It's a lot more effort than people realize.
He doesn't play much cash, from what I've seen.
i skimmed/ballparked what i saw at hendon.

any ideas on what Kessler may have done in a past life? Like, maybe he had some good early years (in whatever job, field, or similar) before 30 and invested such that he doesn't need a huge income anymore, just not a negative one?
his age doesn't surprise me. I'm 42, and kessler has always appeared way older then me, to me.
I think hendon still only shows cashes. So for that 80k you need to add buyins from tournaments where he didn't cash. In other words he either makes very little or is a losing player. Way he plays makes him cash often, while making it less likely he makes top 3. How most tournaments are structured that usually means he's slowly bleeding money.

How did Allen get the nickname "chainsaw"?
Is it because he looks like a serial killer?
How much money do you think he spends on hookers?
