The Triple Crown-winning Khartoum, and it's not up for discussion, IMO.

I am not even a horse guy at all, but I always heard Secretariat was the best horse of all time. Shrug.

Like you said, you aren't a horse guy.

Khartoum was sold for $600K in the 40's. Was so special, when he died, his owner tore down his stables and got out of the horse business entirely.

Horseracing is awesome. There's nothing more exciting to bet on and no sport more exciting to watch.

I hope it doesn't die off when all the old people propping it up die.

I was in a locals bar in Boston when Secreteriat won the Belmont by a gazillion lengths and people who probably knew very little about racing stood up and just started clapping for the horse after the race was over. They were sports fans who knew that they had seen the Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Bill Russell, or Bobby Orr of horses.

I'd have to throw Winx into the mix.

33 consecutive wins is very impressive, and these wins were in group 1 or listed type races against the best horses in the country.

The most remarkable thing is the way she would win. She would settle worst then midfield, often last, they'd sweep around the turn and in a few strides the race was over and she'd win with a leg in the air. Jockey rarely used the whip on her and would usually just ride her to the line hands and heels. Often the jockey would just give her a single tap in the straight and put his whip away.

Winx had a very short stride and is a bonafide freak.

The manner in which Secretariat won the Belmont does stand out as the most amazing single performance of all time.

What a shame that Sham the horse against Secretariat was born the same year. That horse was a triple crown winner.

The same can be said about Alydar who ran second to Affirmed in all three races.
