First off, this isn't a popular vote contest. In swing states, Trump is polling well against all Dem candidates.
Second, the incumbent usually polls poorly against lesser known challengers on the other side, until the general election where the challenger has to face far increased scrutiny.
Even Mondale was polling ahead of Reagan at one point, and he lost 49 of 50 states.

Perceived value is all you need to make a good political bet. Because it's a slow contest (unlike sports), you can buy out via hedging, and lock in a profit if your bet has big value.
When you get 5-1 on a frontrunner, that by itself is a ton of value.

Statistically, they were only tied in that poll, which was right after the Dem National Convention. Before that, and as soon as a a month or two after that, Reagan was crushing Mondale in the polls by 20 points or more.

Seriously, dude. As a diehard libertarian, I was laughing my ass off at the Dems back in ‘84. My boy-then Reagan was so far ahead in the polls except for that brief aberration, it was a forgone conclusion that he would be re-elected long before anyone got into the ballot box.
