Since I started a casino tipping thread, I decided to make a poll regarding a restaurant tipping situation.

Here is what's occurring:

You are dining at a mid-level chain Italian restaurant.

Your veal parmigiana comes out with very little sauce. You are familiar with this dish, having dined here many times before, and know that it's supposed to have a normal amount of marinara sauce. For whatever reason, the cook didn't put enough on. No big deal... you flag down the waitress, mention to her that it doesn't have much sauce, and she says, "I'll get you a side of sauce you can pour on it."

She returns with the side of sauce, you pour it on the plate, everything is fine, and you finish the meal.

Then you get the bill, and you get charged $3 for "extra sauce".

Of course, since it's only $3, it wouldn't hurt to let this go, but you decide for the principle of the matter to have this taken off the bill.

You flag down the waitress again, and politely ask her to remove it, as the "extra" sauce was only to compensate for the fact that they clearly didn't put enough sauce on it in the first place. Furthermore, you mentioned this being the reason when you asked her for the sauce.

She suddenly gets very rude with you, and raises her voice. She condescendingly tells you, "That's what extra sauce costs" and "If you want extra sauce, you need to pay for it". Seeing the discussion is going nowhere, you quickly ask for the manager. She curtly tells you, "Fine, I'll get the manager but she'll tell you the same thing."

You sit for 15 minutes and no manager comes.

Finally, you get up yourself to look for the manager, but are having a hard time locating her. While walking around looking, the waitress sees you and asks if you need something.

"Yeah, I'm looking for the manager," you reply.

The waitress suddenly gets enraged and gets in your face, and actually yells at you.

"I told you I was getting her! We're very busy here, as you can see. I haven't had time to tell her yet. You're not the only customer here! Now sit back down and she'll come when we have a moment for you."

You tell the waitress that 15 minutes is long enough, and that you're not going to wait any longer. She makes a nasty comment about how you need to "learn some patience" and goes and gets the manager.

You sit back down, and the manager agrees that the sauce shouldn't have been charged, and takes it off. She isn't particularly interested in your complaint about the waitress being rude, though, nor does she care that the waitress passive-aggressively made you sit there for 15 minutes when you asked for the manager (and probably longer, had you not gotten up to look into it).

It's time to leave a tip.

How much do you leave?
