Lennon became an acid casualty and a dopehead and ceded creative control of the band to Paul McCartney before the Beatles even broke up. I like John Lennon and I'm not trying to talk shit, but it's very obvious listening to P-Mac and Lennon's solo efforts where the Beatles magic came from. I think John is a natural talent and brilliant lyricist, but as a composer he's not in the same ballpark as McCartney or B Wilson. John AND Paul relied heavily on George Martin during their Beatles days to make good records. Brian was the producer and arranger at the height of The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds), all the good Beatles albums were heavily produced and largely arranged by other people

it's true Brian succumbed to schizophrenia and became a shut in but he was still writing songs and helping with Beach Boys albums during the bed years. keep in mind that the Beach Boys kept going, they didn't break up in 1969. The Beach Boys Love You, which came out in 1977, is loaded with Brian material and is really fuckin good

I’ll give you that Good Vibrations was excellent. But you probably just haven’t listened to Revolution 9 enough times to appreciate its deep and abiding brilliance. To correct that oversight on your part, drop some acid and listen to it repeatedly over a 9-10 hour stretch as a start.

See you on the other side.

P.S. Did I forget to mention doing so while in a sensory deprivation tank?

MB i practically have listened to every classic album on headphones in the dark while tripping by myself, that's basically what I did in my late teens early 20's and that's why I'm so fuckin crazy irl. my most meaningful experiences were Animals by Pink Floyd and Clouds Taste Metallic by Flaming Lips

Perhaps an unbiased perspective on this matter.

Which suggests that we could agree that each deserve a spot on “The Best” podium of popular music for their respective contributions to the art form.

Includes an example of how Brian Wilson deftly used key changes in heartfully crafting God Only Knows.

    They're both amazing. Both 78 and don't look a day over 77.
And yeah Revolver and Pet Sounds came out within a month of each other.
Fun facts, Brian hates the beach and McCartney hates fish and chips

They should do a Vegas gig with the Japanese Beatles and Todd Rundgren as openers

    The influencing worked both ways.

Bob Dylan had released Blonde On Blonde a year earlier, followed by the Beach Boys's Pet Sounds – a project that was, according to Paul McCartney, "the single biggest influence on Sgt. Pepper."

McCartney still as sharp as ever. He’s telling all the stories behind his lyrics etc. now.

His conversation about lsd and drug use is so “matter of fact”. He doesn’t romanticize it nor does he reveal any sense of regret.

David Geffen’s relationship with Lennon and later Yoko after Lennon got shot was something interesting I picked up recently from the Netflix Geffen doc.

I haven’t seen the new Beatles documentary by the Hobbit guy yet. Have you?

All music is derivative. Connecting the dots is the fun.

His problem was heroin. He and yoko were on smack.

You paint Lennon as another Sid Barrett acid casualty. That wasn’t the case, IMO. Everyone did acid. Heroin was his foil. Cold Turkey was a song he wrote that described trying to quit.
