In my day (late '80s / early '90s), USC was the place you went to if you couldn't get into the University of California schools, and if your parents were rich enough to afford it.

Keep in mind that UC schools were cheap then, so the difference in tuition was yuuuuuuuuuuuge (it's still big, but not nearly as pronounced). I paid $1800 in tuition for a YEAR at UCSB in 1990-91.

Anyway, two things have vastly changed since then.

First, UC schools are no longer cheap. This was already rapidly changing as I went through college.

Second, USC has real standards now.

At one time, USC's dirty little secret was that the admissions standards were laughably low. They never admitted this, and in fact shoveled you BS at college fairs that "4.0 students sometimes get rejected", but every so often a magazine or newspaper article would come out exposing the truth. This was way before you could search shit like this on the internet.

I'm not sure when it changed, but it did. Now USC is fairly tough to get into. It's no Harvard by any means, but it's no longer just a place for mediocre kids with rich parents.

This scandal doesn't surprise me. College admissions has been a joke for a very long time, dating back before I was born.

When I was a young lad, I dated a girl who was a complete fuckup in high school. Smart girl, but a complete disaster in school, mostly due to having a really irresponsible mom who somehow had full custody of her.

Anyway, her dad was married to a woman who worked at some mid-level administrative job at USC. You could say it was a her "stepmom", but keep in mind that she did NOT live with her dad, nor was this woman related to her in any way.

Despite that, the woman had the authority to get her into USC. She was not a professor or very high ranking at the college. As I said, she was a mid-level administrator. Even with USC's low standards at this time, this kinda surprised me.

But it's not just USC. There is so much bullshit in college admissions.

    There's the aforementioned nepotism.

There's the college athletics admissions, where they let in great athletes with horrible academics in order to win football and basketball games, in what is basically just an unpaid minor leagues system. (Obviously this is a huge debate/discussion in itself.)

There is the racial element, where Asians are horribly discriminated against, while other non-white minorities are given a tremendous advantage. (It was actually shown in a recent lawsuit that whites approximately break even in this system, and it's the Asians taking it up the ass.)

There's the silly "college essay" requirement, which is supposed to demonstrate who you are as a person, but in reality is just a competition as to whose parents (or hired coaches) can write the most impressive essay.

There is the idiotic emphasis on extracurricular activities regarding deciding who to admit, in a misguided attempt to admit "well rounded" kids. In reality, it's a competition as to which kids' parents are better at helping them puff up their extracurricular claims.

I'm not writing this stuff from a position of bitterness. I got into every school to which I applied. I ended up going to UCSB because I liked the atmosphere and the fact that it was not-too-close, not-too-far from LA.

But even as a 17-year-old, I found the entire admissions process to be a combination of shady and misguided.

Anyone else find it funny that the left starts calling for exposing Trump's grades, and making it a big deal how he got them sealed, then this comes out?

Trump using the DOJ to settle political scores and prove a point?

Either way, it's entertaining as fuck to watch. This never would have seen the light of day in a Hillary run DOJ.

    More details: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...=.667474703a50

Huffman is accused of paying $15,000 — disguised as a charitable donation — to the Key Worldwide Foundation so her oldest daughter could participate in the scam. A confidential informant told investigators that he advised Huffman that he could arrange for a third party to correct her daughter’s answers on the SAT after she took it. She ended up scoring a 1420 — 400 points higher than she had gotten on a PSAT taken a year earlier, according to court documents.
The 1020 her daughter got was just about exactly the PSAT average.

The 1420 cheating score was well over the 90th percentile.

I think “whites breaking even” in the current college admission system is hugely innacurate and part of the cultural Marxist disinformation campaign.

We treat “whites” like they are this monolithic interchangeable population. The truth is there is a very big divide between educated liberal elite whites in blue states and pretty much everyone else. The truth is the former group is helped A LOT by the current system, and the latter group is massively discriminated against. Non-rich whites who come from families without college education are the most under-represented group in colleges, and no one is lifting a finger to do anything about it.

As long as you can avoid being swallowed into self destructive inner city ghetto culture (which I admit is very hard due to peer pressure) there is probably a much clearer path to success being a poor black person in the US than a poor white one.

So, you are saying that rich conservative whites, seeing as they are not “educated liberal elite whites” are being “massively discriminated against”???

In europe every one is on the take, its just a way of life, Rich peoples kids go the best schools otherwise the schools would get run down and delapatated.
TBH one of the main reasons we left europe was to get away from massive corruption from the grocery store clerks to government offices and everyone in-between .
Have been trying for 4 years to build a cabin on a piece of property we purchased 20 or so years ago in a small mountain hamlet. an have been told it won't be a problem so long as we give the government official 10k euro fucking bullshit. my wife refused to pay and so now its a sweet camping area instead.

its fun to watch these smug cunts get there comeuppance i hope they all burn, strictly for the entertainment, drama.

    all hail Hydra

How is any of this news?

Is this followed by an expose that sometimes there's favoritism towards athletes at every single school it matters?

A close friends daughter got rejected by USC last year. She applied to maybe 6 schools and was accepted by all the rest, including higher profile schools. She was pretty sure she was goikg elsewhere anyway, but her rejection letter was super strange. It rejected her, and then listed an explanation of what a typically accepted freshman application looked like. It had like 5 bullet points saying the average accepted freshman had a 32 on ACT, she had a 35. It gave the average SAT, and hers was much higher. GPA and advanced courses were all much higher. All five bullet points she was well above and I happened to be visiting the weekend after she got the rejection letter and wasn’t really upset, but was like “wtf, why even include this benchmark average when I’m well above all of them if they’re going to reject me?” I laughed when I saw this story.

Mumbles its no secret students exercising something other then the liberal socialist party line are indeed discriminated against in colleges where they have to expose their political beliefs in classes such as required crap like sociology, political science etc.. The irony the areas where conservatives don't have to reveal their political leanings are more likely to be chosen by more purely objective and usually left leaning folks such as hard sciences (more likely to be athiests, etc not all obviously but more often they are less conservative and spiritually leaning in general)..

    lolz

Olivia Jade was on the yacht of Rick Caruso, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at USC, when this all went down.

But it's not as scandalous as it sounds. His daughter also goes there, and I guess Olivia became friends with her.

Too bad they weren't friends before she applied to USC, or otherwise this could have been avoided.

Olivia got off the yacht because she was afraid it would look bad if people discovered that's where she was.

    Pretty much this.

But a story like this has been a long time coming.

Hopefully this will lead to a public exploration of what a fucking joke college admissions has been for decades, and some serious reform will occur.

More likely, some other scandalous news story will hit, and this will get buried.

Sociology is not normally a required class, but students looking for a gut “liberal arts/humanities” course to meet a core non-major requirement probably take it versus an English, Literature, or Languages course. Also, poly sci isn’t uniformly dominated across academia by liberals as sociology is.
