American police are, apparently, minor leaguers compared to Indonesian police.

I was mainly referring to disarming police will probably generally have the effect of handing the streets over to organized crime even more, especially in urban areas with large ethnic immigrant populations. Police violence is very far down the list of real problems threatening our civilization. The conversation around police violence is more or less a diversion to avoid acknowledging or addressing real issues.
Demilitarizing the police is NOT disarming them! But stopping the granting of military equipment based on using it in SWAT raids will cut down on their excessive use of them to justify having those toys.
    I disagree.

Militarization of the police does NOT necessarily equal brutality.

It means they are better equipped to handle violent suspects.

Go read about the North Hollywood Bank of America shootout to see what happens when police are underequipped.

You are ignoring how a lot of police departments in the US are now routinely excessively using that equipment in unnecessary raids in order to justify keeping free-of-charge courtesy of federal grants. And a substantial uptick of this militarization came in response to the 9/11 terror attacks.

Here is a paragraph from this article that highlights how ridiculous the situation has become.

And regarding your concern about the bad guys being better armed than police:

Also, there is the issue of police mindset regarding the rest of us due to the military-style training they receive in preparation for conducting SWAT raids.

And lastly (for now), there is mission creep. Lovely, wonderful mission creep.

Still think that the militarization of our police forces hasn’t resulted in an increase in police brutality?
