    Salesman

I feel a need to disclose this information on a humanitarian level
I fell into sales after a hopeful journey in broadcast journalism.
I went from being broke to affording a family.
However, the new job ate me alive. I could not ultimately live with myself
selling something someone doesn't want or need.
There are people who will not think twice about taking your money
    for any reason.

I don't think there is any protection against this unless you have experienced
it from the other side. It's basically using trust as a weapon

It happens everyday. Politics is no different.

    also
A journalism student is taught to double check (at the very least) everything they hear
Just apply the same thinking to everything you are told by unfamiliar sources
Doesn't matter what your opinions are, facts are facts and they can be substantiated.

It takes a special kind of scum to be good at or enjoy selling things to people that you know they shouldn't buy.

I agree 100%. I was lucky in that I was in medical equipment sales. Regardless of their predicament people still had to be convinced of the sale/benefits and the distrustful still needed guidance. It was a lot of pressure in more ways than one.

The field is known as surgical supplies and it involves many items.
A lot of which are aimed at the elderly.
Again, nothing that wasn't needed, but try telling your
granddad that he needs this or that and see how easy it goes

I want to be clear. The most needy customer was sometimes the most difficult
to sell. Whatever the reason selling someone something they could ultimately benefit
from was a major chore and I gave it up after accruing millions

You'll have to google that, I inherited a "field" slightly above that level and it's been a few years
    since I said fuck it.

I actually agree with young les on this issue.

I could never bring myself to be in sales. The only way I could ever take such a job is if I was selling a product I believed in at what I thought was a fair price.

The problem is that most salesmen will say anything to sell anything, and they don't give a shit if they're misrepresenting the product, the "deal" the person is getting, or the customer's need for it.

The problem is the commission model. These salesmen need to sell in order to make any kind of real money, so it incentivizes unethical behavior to make such sales.

Sometimes it graduates into outright scamming, especially where add-ons as involved, such as cell phone plans.

My father was victimized by one of those a few years ago at an AT&T store. They saw an old guy walk in, and figured he was the perfect mark. He bought a new phone (which is what he came for), but they told him they had a "special" where he could get an iPad Mini for $99, only for purchasers of new phones like he was. He snap agreed to this, and then they totally hid the fact that he was also signing up for a $30/month data plan for the Mini. In order to get it by him, they manipulated the "electronic signing" pad to where they didn't give it to him to read and sign until AFTER they had already scrolled past the $30/month screen.

So he got a $30/month new charge on his next bill and said "WTF".

He called the AT&T Store and they told him they were going to hit him with a restocking fee for the iPad and also refused to refund the $30 in service because "You had service this whole month".

Keep in mind my dad is very sharp and still runs his own business, but he's in his mid-70s and they likely targeted him for that reason.

Of course, still being sharp, he told me everything that went down and exactly how it all happened

Anyway, I called those fuckers and told them that I knew exactly what they did. I told them that I was about to go to the police that this store is scamming elderly people, and that I was also about to go public about it everywhere on the internet and the local media. They tried to weakly argue with me at first, but finally conceded that, "Maybe some things happened here that shouldn't have", and asked me what I wanted. I said, "Take back the iPad for a full refund, and remove the $30 from the bill." They weakly argued again, but finally agreed when I reiterated my threats. I also got corporate AT&T to give us a $50 bill credit for our trouble.

But yeah, this all occurred because they told the salespeople that they get $X for every iPad Mini data plan they sell, and thus they were all looking for likely victims. Old people are usually great targets for shit like this.

The Wells Fargo phantom account scam was probably the most famous and far-reaching of the "sales add-on scams" in history.

It’s jokers like this that give salesmen a bad name:

It was based one of the Cohen brothers’ personal experience.

That being said, salesmen are a necessary evil with some very valuable products given the cognitive biases people have with respect to the likelihood of unpleasant-but-low-probability events. Any guesses what I’m talking about?

If they don't buy your shit, they'll buy someone elses shit.

Don't blame the salesman, just remember: CAVEAT EMPTOR.
