IF the attack actually happened, I would say there is about a 75% chance the suspects were black. I would guess the Venn diagram of white people who would actually commit such a hate crime and people who have watched a single second of Empire and would recognize this actor has no overlap at all.

I agree, and furthermore, the typical racist alt-right white guy hates blacks and gays about equally, and wouldn't be particularly outraged to see a guy who is black AND gay.IF the attack actually happened, I would say there is about a 75% chance the suspects were black. If anyone's angry about him being black and gay, it would likely be another black person, as there's still a lot of homophobia in the black community.
Also, note that there are a ton of black people on TV nowadays, as well as a ton of gay people. So neither of these aspects are likely to piss off an alt-right fanatic to where he's going to seek someone out and beat them up just for that.
This letter was sent 8 days before the attack:
Notice "MAGA" in the upper-right corner, and "You will die, black fag" spelled out on the back in cut-out letters.
In other words, it's supposed to be a Trump-loving bigot who somehow has chosen Jussie Smollett as his victim, despite the high prevalence of so many other blacks and gays in Hollywood, and the guy even sent him a letter warning him of impending violence just 8 days before the attack.
Oh, and Smollett refused extra security right before the attack.
To me, it looks likely Smollett beat himself up. Why? Who knows? Probably because he's not right in the head.
The "MAGA" and "die black fag" reminds me of the same over-the-top perpetrator stereotype used in the 2001 anthrax letters. Those were made to look like they were sent by Muslim terrorists. In reality, it was a white guy guilty of the whole thing, and his over-the-top "Allah is great" rhetoric was meant as a distraction. I never believed these were sent by a Muslim.
Whenever you perpetrate a hoax, you have to make sure that you don't try too hard to hit people over the head with the story. If it's all laid out too perfectly, it probably didn't happen, or the supposed perpetrators aren't the ones who really did it.
And Liberals claim FBI crime statistics are fake.
