CNN) -- The mother of baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr. was safe Wednesday after someone abducted her the day before, from her Maryland home investigators said.

A man with a gun showed up at Vi Ripken's home between 7 and 8 a.m. Tuesday, police in Aberdeen, Maryland, said in a statement. The man forced her into a vehicle and drove off, the statement said.

About 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Baltimore County police contacted their counterparts in Aberdeen to discuss a report of a suspicious vehicle. Information from that call led to the investigation of Ripken's whereabouts, the statement said. She was found unharmed about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday in a vehicle near her home.

Investigators are looking for a motive. Aberdeen police said that they have no knowledge of a ransom being demanded or paid and that Cal Ripken apparently wasn't contacted.

Rich Wolf, a spokesman for the FBI in Baltimore, said the FBI is helping local police investigate the case. Police are looking for a white male in his late 30's to early 40's last seen wearing a light colored shirt, glasses and "camo pants."

Ripken 'shining a light' on good things
The Ripken family released a statement expressing gratitude for Vi Ripkin's safe return.

"This has been a very trying time for our family, but we are grateful and relieved that mom is back with us, safe and healthy," the statement said.

Cal Ripken Jr. achieved stardom as a shortstop with the Baltimore Orioles and is a member of baseball's Hall of Fame.

He holds the Major League Baseball record for playing in the most consecutive games -- 2,632 from 1982 to 1998. He made 19 straight All-Star appearances and won two Most Valuable Player awards, racking up 3,184 hits and 431 home runs.

    Ripken doesn't stop after retiring

If you are going to commit a crime, it has to be planned all the way through. In a kidnapping event, the abduction phase is the second most dangerous. Kidnapping should always be planned backwards. Start with the release phase and end with the abduction.

This guy had no idea what he was doing or he got outwitted by a 74 year old woman.

Why are US prisons so full?

    Bad planning.

I see you've put quite a bit of thought into possibly kidnapping someone.

Very very strange story. You would think it would be the talk of the town(Ripkens=Royalty in Bmore) but it just got a casual mention on talk radio all day. I think everyone is saying this makes no sense, let's wait and see what else comes out before we really start talking about it. I mean it is not every day 80 year old ladies get kidnapped at gunpoint...from their house. And then returned the next day.

There is actually a simple explanation for her being returned, and that is because this idiot didn't realize who he kidnapped and when he found out he probably shit himself. He probably thought it was some random old lady, but instead it was the mother of one of the most loved/respected/powerful people in the state of MD. The manhunt would have been nuts something out of the movies, the whole fucking state would have been on lockdown until they found her.

RIPKENS=GODS around here, kidnapper just took a bad beat with his victim. #itsjustbadluck
