Posey and Mauer have had remarkably similar careers. Kind of weird. Posey's is obviously still going, so things can change, but I think due to the scarcity of quality catchers over the past 20 years they both get in eventually. They'll both probably have to wait for a few years, maybe 5-10 years of voting, but the momentum will gain. They are/were both pretty well liked by the media and are pretty squeeky clean off-the-field, which matters more than it should.

The shortness of their peak years, lack of shiny HR numbers, and injury issues will hold them back for a bit before the hesitant voters finally come around on the fact they played the most demanding position in the game.

Ivan Rodriguez had overall better numbers and a longer prime than those two, I'm not gonna compare him to them. But Ivan got voted in first ballot, meanwhile say like Larry Walker, who had better career numbers than Ivan, is still waiting. Catcher vs OF. Posey and Mauer will creep past people with better numbers than them also.

do you think this is enough to consider mauer a catcher? cause I think that's what his candidacy relies on...not to say he wasn't a really good player...but he only had 2100 hits and 140+ HRs...at least when you look at buster he's played 80+% of his games at catcher...

Buster Posey manned what is arguably the most important position on the field for 3 Championship teams in 5 years.

I am pretty sure being a 3x World Champion still carries weight with baseball purists.

    Sanlmar flips bat.

There are great players who played for not so great teams. Some never get a chance to be tested. We will never know. Tough luck.

There are others who do get to the biggest stage and fail. We’ve covered that pretty thoroughly in this thread.

    Lol, why wait?

East coast fans are the best. Philly fans are certainly somewhere in the top 3.

Harper is a tough kid. It will be hard to break him but Philly will give it a shot. Trout knew what he was doing by staying in LA & watching the weather channel.

Maybe time for Dodgers to grab Kemp back for the Major League minimum?

Pollock on the DL, so he could be useful, at least for now.

I'd be looking at Aaron Altherr right now before Kemp.

I'd be looking at Aaron Altherr right now before Kemp.
Altherr is a mess. Clearly he has a lot greater upside, especially long term, but he has looked terrible since the beginning of 2018. He also hasn't been released yet -- just DFA'd.

Kemp could help in the short term. Last few seasons he's been good in the first half, before collapsing in the second. He also seems truly happy in LA, whereas he is uncomfortable everywhere else. I bet he would be thrilled to be back on the Dodgers, and there's a decent chance he would get energized and provide some short term value. This is a guy with loads of talent whose head has always been his worst enemy. Yes, he's older now, last year showed what can happen if he's feeling good.

    All I can say is:

While Baez is very good, Yelich has shown that he's become a legit superstar, and Bellinger's huge breakout isn't considered to be a fluke by most experts. Also, Bellinger is only 23, so you can imagine how many huge years the Dodgers might get out of him -- and several more on the cheap.
Javi does things on d and on the bases that these 2 couldn't dream of doing.
All around Javi is better than both of them. They hit slighly better but as an all around baseball player Javi is better

Enjoy seeing the Cubs wear themselves out during the regular season battling the good Cardinals and Brewers.

The Dodgers can relax with their division of 3 mediocre opponents and 1 bad opponent.

Justin Turner hit 3 HR tonight.

How many does he now have on the year?

    4.

But he is hitting over .300 now.

Turner sometimes loses his power stroke for awhile when he's hurting, so this is a good sign. For quite some time, he had 0 HR, and finally hit one recently.

Bellinger has cooled down some. I think dislocating his shoulder has derailed the torrid hitting to some degree. So Turner starting to hit better is a welcome sight.

Somehow Hyun-Jin Ryu threw a CG shutout, and now has a 39/2 K/BB ratio for the season. Actually, he was also excellent last year when healthy.

Dodgers have a 3-game lead in the West, but honestly I don't see any team really having much of a chance to overtake them after 162 games. No other team in the division is all that good.

It's not like the NL Central where the Cubs/Cardinals/Brewers are going to fight it out all year. There's a good chance that both wildcards come from that division.

I think the Sawks may be able to sneak into the playoffs as a wildcard this year, even if they don't turn their season around enough to overtake the Yankees and Devil Rays.

The AL just doesn't have many real wildcard contenders this year.

I don't expect Texas, Angels, Oakland, KC, Detroit, White Sox, Baltimore, or Toronto to really go anywhere this year.

That leaves Houston and Seattle in the West, Minnesota and Cleveland in the Central, and Tampa/Yankees/Boston in the East. If those end up being the contenders, only two of them will fail to see the postseason, and the Sawks may be able to finish ahead of whoever finishes 2nd in the Central and West.

Would still be a letdown after last year, but not a complete disaster.

A complete disaster would be sitting home all October.

Twins now 4 up on Cleveland. They still are gonna need another consistent starter if they make the postseason. Maybe they'll bid on Keuchel after the draft, could obviously use Kimbrel also.

Their FA signings have generally all worked out well, and have improved the team. I never thought that I'd be glad we have Schoop at 2nd instead of Dozier, but here we are. Dozier has really fallen off a cliff.

The internal improvements though have been more important. Jorge Polanco had another 5 hit game yesterday, his 2nd of the year (he hit for the cycle in the first, was the classic "short-a-triple" in this one) and is hitting .344 now. He's gradually gotten better every year after being not a super highly regarded prospect. Kind of like Dozier was, but a much more patient hitter, albeit with less power. Mitch Garver has been great at catcher, they're occasionally batting him leadoff now. Another guy who was never regarded highly as a prospect.

Dodgers Hitting Coach Van Scoyok is a killjoy.

The way he had the Todgers prepared for Padres Paddack.
The quickness with which Belanger broke his slump.
I could go on and on.

Druff would go on about what superstar bats these guys are. Meh.

Was reading about early Van Scoyok (consultant to Dodgers) and replacement level/5th round talent Chris Taylor. Van Scoyok dismantled Taylor’s swing and reinvented the bum. The Dodgers bomb out of 2018 playoffs without the lead off work Taylor did.

I’m sure if I dig I will unearth an early Muncy or Turner connection to Van Scoyok.

The assistant hitting coach, Brant Brown, is approved too.

Van Scoyok doesn’t coach pitching so I’ll still enjoy the playoffs but this guy is like a rainy summer.

Sale strikes out 17 in 7 innings.

Red Sox still manage to lose the game, despite fanning 24 Rockies in just 11 innings.

Dodgers back to their home dominance.

After winning over 2/3 of their home games from 2015-2017, they sputtered in 2018, only going 45-37.

This year they're 18-6 already. Sadly, I saw one of the six losses.

They've already opened up a 4.5 lead on the division.

It would honestly be a big shock to me if they don't win their 7th consecutive division title.

However, notice how Machado is killing them? If that guy just hustled more and had the same drive as he has when he plays his former team, he'd be so much better. He really is wasting a lot of his talent.

If Seager has gotten right, watch out. Lineup will be damn scary.

One thing the team is missing?

They don't have a shutdown ace anymore, like they did in the Kershaw/Greinke years when they had two.

Buehler is still finding himself, Kershaw seems to be entering a "good but not great" second phase of his career, and while Ryu has been excellent when healthy since the beginning of 2018, it's hard to count on him continuing to contribute at that level and avoid injury.

Oh, and Julio Urias got arrested for domestic violence. Ugh.

Can't complain about the overall results so far. 28-16, easily in first place.

I'm just afraid this team doesn't quite have the pitching dominance it needs to win the World Series.

For those wondering about Kimbrel and Keuchel, word is that they will remain unsigned until June 3, at which point teams can sign them without a compensatory draft pick.

After that, both of them should move.

Keuchel is looking more like he will go to the AL, though the Padres have talked about grabbing him if they're still in the playoff race.

Kimbrel will land on some contender without a well established closer. Cubs are a fair guess is they don't get Strop or Morrow healthy.
