I don't think that would work because teams don't want a revolving door in and out of their teams...you can't build a team or get a superstar to have an identity with a fanbase if the guy is only gonna be there 1-2 years...

NBA had this problem...owners couldn't help themselves giving out these dogshit 7-8 year contracts so they trimmed it to max contracts being 4+1s (I think)...now you are seeing what happens...NBA is a different animal than baseball...don't know if baseball wants this kinda drama...

I think the teams are fine with it at this point. If they want, they can keep re-signing the same guy over and over.

This protects the teams, obviously. The players love the long contracts. Those rarely favor the team, because the ones getting the long contracts are usually the superstars who are being paid for their peak, not for what they will do 10 years from now.

I think the fans are just happy if the teams win. In fact, I think NBA is more superstar-driven than baseball, since there are only 5 players on the floor at the same time. Fans like getting attached to a Lebron or Kobe type, but in baseball I think people just want to see the team win.

Another possible solution to the free agent situation is to get the union to agree to more performance incentives in these monster contracts.

So, fine, hand Bryce Harper the 10-year, $350 million contract, but make half of that tied each year to his performance, where he has to meet certain OPS, HR, and AVG requirements.

This way he's still guaranteed $175m no matter what happens, but the team isn't stuck with a $35m/year albatross if he turns out to be a dud (especially in the second half of the contract).

Teams are rightfully cold now on paying players big money for likely unproductive years in their 30s.

That sounds good in theory, but laughably impossible in practice.

From management side, budgeting would be impossible if you don't know how much you owe your players.

Players would be less inclined to play through pain, as any slight performance loss will actually hurt them.

Basically you are suggesting permanent arbitration, which no one really wants.

This year, it's the agents, IMO, slowing everything down. Machado n Harper are very comparable players, and neither wants to sign first. Neither wants to lose the possible leverage of being second.

This is then causing next level guys to wait also, and etc. Once 1 of those 2 sign, it will be a mad rush for everyone left.

    I don't think it's really permanent arbitration.

Nor do I think it's hard to budget this.

Take the 10-year/$350m contract where only half is guaranteed, and the other half releases up to $17.5m each year due to performance.

The team can just assume they are spending $35m each year, and then get the pleasant surprise when they get some money BACK.

Also, it could be structured to where they will play through pain, where accumulated stats like HR are part of the calculation, and it's not just about averages.

It could also be on a sliding scale, so there's not an obsession with milestones.

    Something has to be done.

Teams are pretty much done paying huge money for players expected to go into serious decline by the second half of their contract.

BTW, I feel Harper is a better player than Machokedo. Manny is the guy who is going to go to shit really quickly when his physical abilities start to fade after 30, plus he seems to have a lower ceiling than Harper.

With Harper, you get the feeling that he can absolutely destroy the ball for an extended period of time if he stays healthy. With Machado, not so much.

Machado to Padres for 300m, 10 years. Some sort of opt out after 5 years (bet they take it).

Look at that. Machado is the best shortstop in the NL West for a second straight year

    Off to a great start.

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw taking step back from throwing

The guy is clearly on the back 9 but after the Dodgers giving him a fresh $31m+/yr this is fair play

There is no way a Dodgers fan can comment on Machado.

100% Padres win WS first. But no one will care either way in SoCal.

The remaining 300M (although some speculation has been itll be 400m) question is where does Bryce Harper end up. Rumors continue to abound that its Philly but theres also suddenly rumors that the owner of the Nats has decided to say Fuck it and try and resign Harper now for whatever he wants in a last minute bid to try and win a WS before he rolls over dead (dude is older then dirt) plus the whole Harper moving within the division could leave a bad taste in some peoples mouths.. Personally makes no difference to me.. Im a long time suffering fan of the ownership of Peter Angelos and the dumpster fire that has been the Baltimore Orioles now for awhile (baring their brief playoff streak under Showalter a few years back..

Reportedly the Dodgers, Giants, and Phillies are the most likely landing spots for Harper at this point.

The Dodgers seemed to be backing away from Harper for awhile, but now suddenly they're interested again.

A site called inquisitr.com claimed it was a "done deal" for the Dodgers, and it would be announced on Friday. However, this was announced at the same time Harper was said to be in San Francisco talking to the Giants, so it's probably not true.

Despite the Pollock signing, the Dodgers do have room in the outfield for Harper.

They only have one really established outfielder at this point -- Pollock.

Bellinger can play 1B or OF.

Pederson and Verdugo haven't proven themselves to be full time players yet.

Taylor is probably needed at 2B, where it's basically a choice between him, Kike Hernandez, and Max Muncy.

So if Harper signs with LA, it will look something like:

    C Barnes/Martin
    1B Muncy
    2B Taylor
    3B Turner
    SS Seager
    LF Bellinger
    CF Pollock
    RF Harper

They'll probably sit Muncy and Taylor sometimes, and replace them with Pederson/Verdugo.

In the meantime, the PECOTA projection system has the Cubs in last place.

    No, I'm not kidding.

    https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/dc/

What do you think of that, big dick?

It also forecasts a pretty bad AL, with the same 4 powerhouses as last year, and the rest of them fighting for the scraps of the 2nd wildcard spot. It thinks Tampa Bay will make the playoffs with 85 wins. Shameful.

Interestingly, it thinks there's such parity in the NL that only one team -- the Dodgers -- will win more than 89 games.

It also forecasts the Reds at .500, and Pirates at almost .500.

I disagree with the Pirates (I think they're finishing last, tough luck badguy), and I think the Cubs will be better than the 79 wins forecasted. The Reds may actually semi-contend, because they showed flashes of being a good team at times.

You completely ignored the division winning Cardinals

Dodgers obviously looking to solve their lack of left handed hitting with Harper. He’s gonna love the nerd trust’s platoon approach.

I have mixed emotions. I just have to trust, as I always do, that the Dodgers will come up short.

Buehler Cy Young will have to be enough.

There's the new next Pujols contract signed today. 13/330 for Bryce. Lower AAV than Machado got,but apparently just wanted to set the record for highest total dollars. The 2 agents must have decided as this being the truce between them. This furthers my belief that the agents competing with each other is the sole reason why they didn't sign until recently.

Anyway, supposedly the deal is front loaded, which is smart by the Phillies I suppose....but no opt-outs (which is surprising) and full no-trade. Maybe the Phillies assume the DH will be in the NL soon....they better hope for that. He might be a Bonds-like statue in LF by year 6 or 7 of this deal.

I still like the Nats in that tough division. Everyone sleeping on Robles now for some odd reason. Kid might have a better year than Harper. With Soto breaking out last year also, if Eaton can stay healthy (big if) Nats really dont lose much from their lineup, which is an odd thing to say after losing the guy who signs the highest contract ever.

    That’s a bit excessive.

so you are saying he is going to win back to back gold gloves like bonds did at that age?
