HIGHLIGHTS
- The American man was a missionary who wanted to preach Christianity
- He went to the North Sentinel Island with the help of a fisherman
- North Sentinel Island is home to a tribe that violently rejects contact with outside world
The American was identified as
27-year-old John Allen Chau, who sources said was a Christian missionary who wanted to convert the Sentinelese tribe that inhabits the island where he was killed.
Chau was killed by members of this tribe, which is protected under Indian law, a senior police officer told India Today TV.
The officer stressed that the Sentinelese must be left alone and that any forced contact with the outside world could put them in danger.
Chau was murdered on the North Sentinel Island, which is part of the Andaman Islands, and seven people have been arrested in connection with the murder.
The seven arrested are local fishermen who allegedly helped Chau reach the North Sentinel Island.

The American went ashore in his kayak on Nov. 15 and sent the boat with the fishermen out to sea to avoid detection, Pathak said. He interacted with some of the tribespeople, offering gifts such as a football and fish. But the tribespeople became angry and shot an arrow at him, hitting a book he was carrying, Pathak said.
After his kayak was damaged, Chau swam back to the fishermen’s boat, which was waiting at a prearranged location. He spent the night writing about his experiences on pages that he then gave the fishermen, Pathak said. He set out again to meet the tribespeople on Nov. 16.
What happened then isn’t known. But on the morning of the following day, the waiting fishermen watched from a distance as the tribesmen dragged Chau’s body. They left for Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where they broke the news to Chau’s friend, who in turn notified his family, Pathak said.

Chau made two or three trips to the island by canoe from Nov. 15, making contact with the tribe but returning to his boat. He told the fishermen on Nov. 16 he would not come back from the island and instructed them to return home and pass on some handwritten notes he had made to a friend, Pathak said.
The next morning they saw his body being dragged across a beach and buried in the sand, the police chief said, adding: “This was a misplaced adventure in a highly protected area.”
A source with access to Chau’s notes said Chau had taken scissors, safety pins and a football as gifts to the tribe.
In his notes, the source said, Chau wrote that some members of the tribe were good to him while others were very aggressive.
“I have been so nice to them, why are they so angry and so aggressive?” the source quoted Chau as saying.
The source, who asked not to be named, said Chau wrote that he was “doing this to establish the kingdom of Jesus on the island...Do not blame the natives if I am killed.”
This zealot went to Oral Robert's University in Oklahoma. Hopefully his story of ultimate sacrifice for the lord will result in groups of like minded fanatics to meet an identical end on the same sands.
The Sentinelese Island is the only place I've heard of where the killing of trespassers is allowed by the ruling state. The seven charged with a crime are Indian fishermen that transported the deceased, not the murderers.
If you're the type to criticize the celebration of any human death, go fuck yourself. How many times have you paid to watch "bad" peeps being killed in a movie theatre? And felt good upon leaving?
