ATTN: NHL - Shut It Down

The NHL really needs to just go "shut the hell up" and lock the players out.

Contracts are out of control and you can see what players are actually looking out for the best interest of the teams they are playing for and willing to go to, and which ones are just being whores at this moment.

I think a lock out is needed so players can realize what they're doing is fucked up. We're seeing Parise and Suter colluding to get ridiculous contracts, and now this Shea Weber situation is way out of hand. What the fuck do you need 27 million in the first year for? These front loaded contracts are a joke and they need to start capping by year not by average over umpteen years, the last few of which will never be played.

I say lock the players out and eliminate this front loaded bullshit. It will fuck teams like the Wild and the Flyers but who gives a shit at this point. This is so out of hand it's sickening.

There is a salary cap in place in the NHL. A portion of the salary is kept in escrow. The league is healthy. A weak US dollar helps the Canadian teams keep pace since salaries are paid in USD while revenues for Canadian teams are in CDN. A long term front loaded contract offer to a restricted free agent is both a response to a very likely work stoppage and also a tactic to keep the team being raided from matching. From my perspective, the biggest issue facing the league is injuries to star players, especially concussions, and maybe guaranteed contracts, although there are buy-out provisions, but the cap hit of buy-outs is a problem for owners.

You could write this exact post about every North American sports league. Players make too much in every league.

I find it foolish that anyone in this thread can put a legitimate worth of a player.

Walter White and Jesse Pinkman get paid 1.5 mil for 3 months NOT because they can cook the best meth in the entire southwest, its because the black dude can make 96 million for the product they deliver.

You should shut the fuck up with this socialist garbage, assigning worth to individuals. When you have the talent as Parise and etc THEN you can get pissed off. Otherwise bitch at your favorite team that didn't want to pay their salary.

Jeremy Lin got 30 mil for the 3rd yr of his contract. Should I be pissed off at the Rockets? No, If I feel that he is worth that I should be pissed off at the Knicks.

I don't give to shits about hockey or follow it, but in other sports if a loophole is exposed in the CBA and teams are blatantly using it to gain an advantage they will change it.

Happened in NBA, happened in NFL and it will happen in NHL if the teams are exploiting a mistake. These agreements are never perfect and a going to need a little tweaking every once in a while. The NHL basically started from scratch a few years ago, and a few things that they missed were bound to show up.

Well Nashville matched the Weber deal, so obviously it wasn't too far-fetched.

Not sure how you can blame the players at all. They're not writing their own checks. If the owners deem it worthwhile to pay Player X "y" amount of dollars, then they are going to do it. Most of the time in sports, a few idiot owners will keep trying to outsmart/outspend the rest, which leads to other (read: smallmarket) owners throwing a hissyfit, and then a lockout happens.

Players have priced themselves out of a job before. Jermaine Dye a couple years ago in MLB, and the notorious Latrell Spreewell saying he couldn't feed his family off of $10mil a year. Neither of them have been heard from since.

The NHL did reject the Kovalchuk deal a couple years ago that would have paid him until age 44 season I think it was? They altered the CBA so long contracts can only go to age 40 season now I believe, 41 maybe? There's nothing wrong with the Parise, Suter, and Weber deals. Smart cap management, and there is a good chance they could play out the length of deal, and they're getting paid appropriately by age. The NFL is the real joke where they have backloaded deals that are unguarenteed, and you know the guys won't ever see the last couple years of the deal.
