A year old but I just saw this... Mama from "Mama's Family" insults homeless guy Ted Williams

    Really weird, right?

I used to really like Mama's Family back in the '80s, which itself was derived from The Carol Burnett Show. Well, I liked the original version. The syndicated version sucked.

Vicki Lawrence, who played the elderly "Mama", was only in her 30s during her time on Mama's Family (you could see it easily by looking at her skin), but now she's closer to the age of the character she's always played. Lawrence was 62 last year when she made this video.

On a side note, I used to know her husband Al Schultz (who was the makeup artist for "All in the Family" and various other '70s sitcoms), and the guy was a real asshole. Surprised she's stayed married to him since 1974.

You've also posted in the past that you have never heard of Stephen J. Cannell.

You and Beebs (who didn't recognize the All in the Family end song) remind me of the generation gap that sometimes exists here.

Anyway, Vicki Lawrence is a comedienne whose main routine has been playing a cranky old lady. She created this role on the Carol Burnett Show, playing Carol's mother, despite being as young as her mid 20s when she invented the character in 1974. It eventually became its own show in the '80s, called "Mama's Family".

Lawrence is now 63, so she no longer has the novelty of being a young woman playing a grandmother.

She has had a long marriage to the makeup artist from "All in the Family". I knew her husband many years ago, and he was an asshole. Kinda disappointed me, because I liked Lawrence and her "Mama" character.

She isn't actually homeless. This was a parody of the Ted Williams situation. I imagine she did this to get some attention, because she really hasn't had that much work in the past 20 years.

seems to be harboring a few sour grapes for whatever reason, but a little logic says she's attempting to piggy back his fame into her aspirations on a new sitcom or perhaps renewing interest in her old one (which was awful)

cheap shot, probably why i never saw it before now, but nice find either way.

Actually that's the Mamma character to a T. She got the part on the Carol Burnette show because she resembled Burnette so much.

This song was a big hit country/pop when it came out.
