Happy 40th birthday to Dustin "neverwin" Woolf

One of the first players (if not the first) to win a million dollars online in a short period of time.

His epic run up in early 2004 eventually spawned neverwinpoker.com, which is the reason this forum exists today.

His birthday was actually yesterday, but "close enough".

Dustin once told me he would be dead before 50, but that means he still has a good 10 years left.

    Happy birthday!

In a nutshell, what was the secret to his success then? Aggressive play always?

Yes, he played mainly heads up, and engaged in a hyper-aggressive playstyle which was tough to counter, and immensely frustrating when he was running hot (which he was for several months).

I played him early in this run, still believing him to be a fish (which he was in 2003). However, he changed his "dumb aggression" 2003 playstyle into "smart aggression" in 2004, and I didn't know that yet.

Interestingly, an early match versus me almost KO'd him before his million dollar run started. He had about 20k on Stars at the time, and was sitting alone in 100/200. Having owned him super hard in 2003 on Stars, I was excited to see him there, and played him heads up. I ran hot at first, and was flopping top pair repeatedly. He quickly chunked off most of the 20k to me, and was on the ropes. Finally I stopped hitting hands, and he started hitting everything. He won all of the money back plus some more, and finally I realized he had vastly improved, and quit him.

Had he busted that last few thousand to me, he might not have had the roll to continue playing, and he might have been finished before he started.

I was probably the first to play "new" neverwin. He then destroyed every single opponent to sit with him, and at one point had run up a million dollars.

In May of that year (2004), Micon sought to capitalize on neverwin's sudden notoriety, and they agreed to start neverwinpoker.com, which was to be a fan site for Dustin.

I heard about this within days of it launching, and showed up there to troll it.

My then-rivalry with neverwin interested people, plus people recognized me from Stars and started asking me poker questions. This got people posting, and a degenerate/free speech environment quickly developed, which made the site an anti-2+2. Micon had nothing to do with any of this, but he sat by and watched as I inadvertently made the site active. This was before I knew Micon at all, and before I had met neverwin in person (we were Stars rivals at the time).

    The rest is history.

Although a rookie, I realized there was something special when listening to Druff and Dustin talk limit poker. It was way above me but fascinating to hear the thought process behind their success

And having background huffing from Neverwin made it even more real and entertaining

    Glad he is still alive.

One person who would have been better off without poker.

I had no idea how Druff made it possible for Dustin to create NWP until today.
