Official Statement by Walter Espinoza, director of Judiciary Investigative Police (OIJ) in Costa Rica regarding the arrests that took place this Friday in relation to the kidnapping of American-Costa Rican citizen William Sean Creighton, known in the sportsbook industry as 5Dimes Tony:

¨The District Attorney´s office carried out 10 searches today in relation to a kidnapping that occurred on September 24, 2018, OIJ received the report the following day, September 25, 2018, the victim of the kidnap is an American businessman of last name Creighton, first name William, that had commercial activities in the area of San Pedro. This person was intercepted in the area of Granadilla, Curridabat, precisely the night of September 24, this event had the participation of at least four people, these four people were aboard a gray pick-up truck (…) according to the hypothesis of the police, two officers of the transit police also took part of the event, these two officers contributed to stopping Creighton´s car, this allowed the people aboard the pick-up truck to proceed with the kidnapping. It was at this point that the criminal group began negotiations with the victim´s family to obtain ransom money, initially they requested a very high amount, of close to $5 million USD, this amount was then brought down to close to $1 million USD which is the amount that was actually paid through the use of crypto currency, specifically bitcoins. OIJ initiated the investigation on September 25 when the report was received and after negotiations and the payment had already taken place. At this point we were able to determine that the suspects had maintained communication among themselves, that some of them had already left the country, and we managed to establish that they had distributed the different functions to carry out the crime”.

¨The searches took place in Cartago (2), La Union (2), Santo Domingo Heredia (1), La Trinidad Moravia (1), Limón, Siquirres and Sarapiquí; three people were also detained in Zaragoza, Spain in collaboration with Spanish authorities, this because the investigation showed that the leader of the organization, identified as Jorduan Morales Vega had left the country by ground to Panama, he then traveled to El Salvador and from there to Cuba where he remained for one month and then moved to Spain where we relocated several times. Spanish police has maintained vigilance over the suspects for over a month. In Spain three people were detained, Morales Vega, his wife, Maria Fernanda Solís Cháves, and the mother of Morales, of name Guiselle Vega Aguirre (…) (there is evidence that both the mother and wife were directly related with the crime) during the search we found documents that link the suspects to the kidnap, particularly financial information, including details of the three e-wallets were the ransom money was transferred. (…) The grandmother of Morales Vega was also arrested in Moravia, with strong links to the kidnapping”.

“The man driving the gray pick-up truck was detained in Santo Domingo de Heredia, and he is identified as Mauricio Castillo, the pick-up truck was rented under the name of Jorduan Morales Vega, the other two people in the truck were Alejandro Vega Aguirre and Kenny Fort Dougma, this last one was the one that drove Creighton´s car after the kidnap and crashed it in Heredia”.

Espinoza added that throughout the whole investigation the priority has been to locate the victim, however, at this point Creighton’s location or situation is unknown.

As per the investigation all the people involved in the crime were arrested today.

So it looks like one portion of the "kidnapping is fake" conspiracy turned out to be true:

The crashed car thing was indeed staged.

They used corrupt cops to stop Tony's car, and then he was kidnapped by thugs. Then one of the thugs got into Tony's car and intentionally crashed it elsewhere, thus making it look like the kidnapping occurred there.

CNN just picked up the story:

    https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/13/ameri...eme/index.html

tldr But after a payment was made, the kidnappers stopped communicating with Kopko's family and he is still missing.

I've seen this in a few mainstream news outlets, but it's amazing how little info they have.

Shouldn't high budget news organizations like CNN be able to get as many details as these crap sites in Costa Rica? Seems like they just rehash those articles with a summary, and that's it.

Also interesting that this took 4 months for anyone to report, outside of Costa Rican media and a few gambling-interested sites like this one.

Another semi-fluff mainstream media report, but this one has video and is actually OK in some ways:

    https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/n...-rica-60343910

The amount of digging in the basement and yard of that property does not bode well (unless they're just going along with the narrative).

This jives with everything I heard at the time it happened - he would never be in the part of CR his car was found it wasn't his body they found.

    What a crazy story.

Hard to picture a scenario at this point where Tony is alive.

The ringleaders bounced to other countries, all known accomplices have been arrested, and no one has made contact with the family for 3.5 months regarding a further ransom demand. So why would they just be holding him for all this time? And who would be holding him who wasn't yet arrested?

Looks like they either planned to murder him all along, or they decided that was their only choice as they fled the country.

I always felt that situations like this are the greatest danger to starting an online gambling site in a poor, third world country. You're pretty much asking to be kidnapped at some point.

Too bad this never happened to Scott Tom or the other AP guys.

    http://www.diarioextra.com/Noticia/d...resario-gringo

A group of assassins recorded the macabre moment when they buried the body of the American businessman William Sean Creighton Kopko, who was buried in a farm located on Yerba Buena street, very close to the toll on Route 32, where they would have made a pit .

Confidential sources mentioned to DIARIO EXTRA that the recording is proof that the mortal entrustment was executed to the letter and the assassins sent it to their bosses to consider the agreement fulfilled.

The burial was late at night on an undetermined day, the gravediggers needed a lamp and a pick to dig the pit in the middle of a thicket; as for the corpse it appears covered with what appears to be a black sheet.

According to El Periódico de Más Venta in Costa Rica, the group that kidnapped him, whose members were captured and discounted in pretrial detention, only what he intended was to take money, but it seems that Tony recognized one of his captors.

However, it is not ruled out that he is a former employee of his, who worked for several years in the betting house located in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, where the victim left on Monday September 24, when they saw him for the last time riding alone in your Porsche Cayenne Turbo vehicle to your home.

    2 CRIMINAL GROUPS

It is not ruled out that the group of assassins who kept the businessman sitting for several minutes in a chair, while they thought what they were doing with him, was from Puntarenas. In the end, they decided to put a plastic bag on his head until he died of suffocation.

Agents of the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) conducted an inspection on the farm where the gringo is believed to be buried, but after several hours of digging and combing the area with a dog specialized in human remains, they could not find the remains, However, the case remains under investigation.

The day of the "lift", Tony was carrying a laptop and a cell phone that the criminals stole and pledged, however the police managed to recover them days later, also analyzed for information, but so far nothing has allowed to locate it.

DIARIO EXTRA learned that a group of private investigators handled the version that the money deposited for the rescue of Tony, who also owns several betting houses, would have received Cuban citizens living on the island and that some of the "masterminds" "They left the country.

    So... no body.

What are the chances he's still alive, and some of these people are just taking the fall for being accessories to the "murder"?

I think he's probably dead, but until a body is found which is his, I can't say for sure.

    Very weird situation.

Yeah, "on a farm on Yerba Buena street, very close to the toll on Route 32" seems like a very specific area to search and yet they found nothing and dogs could not sniff anything out? The absurdity of this case continues. What's this whole Cuban connection thing?!

Wait. Maybe something was lost in the translation. When you translated the headline with that picture of the black body bag, you get:

    Name: diario.png
Views: 1147
Size: 2.29 MB

... they are saying they have a body?!

EDIT: I see the caption says (translated):

DIARIO EXTRA obtained the photograph that the assassins sent as evidence to the person who hired them.

OK, so this photo is not from the police, it is from the assassins. I hope they had more proof for them then a bag on the ground...

The Cuban connection seems to be the fact that $750k or so was sent to Cuba via bitcoin.

It's unclear to me how they know the bitcoin was received in Cuba. Maybe that's where it was sold for cash?

    Whole thing is so weird.

If the wallet tried to convert to fiat at an exchange then the exchange would know where the account was accessed, where the owners of the account lived, etc.

Not saying this is what happened but 750k worth of BTC - can't see the kidnappers sitting on it - they are prob gonna try to convert it to "real" money some kind of way.

    Translation of above article:

Although there have been several situations in the disappearance of William Sean Creighton Kopko, an American businessman who is soon to be a missing year, there would be a light that could end the odyssey that the family has lived and has generated extensive work for researchers .

The previous week a body was found in Quepos, Puntarenas, which is believed to be that of the owner of bookmakers and for which a band was arrested that is linked to the kidnapping.

Some of these people were captured in the country and others in Spain during January, where the ringleader would have focused on making money and for this reason he designed, coordinated and executed the entire plan.

Precisely those involved are discounting pretrial detention, domiciliary and there are others with alternate measures, as the investigations progress.

In the specific case of the corpse located in Quepos, the corresponding laboratory tests will be developed to determine if it is in fact the man, owner of a sportbook, who was kidnapped in his Porsche.

The probabilities are high that in fact they are the remains of the American, but it will be the forensic results that allow to give 100% verification of the information provided.

    IMPORTANT DATA

The OIJ together with private investigators have developed important lines and searches to collect the largest amount of evidence in order to link them to the process.

Precisely important details have been revealed such as the participation of two traffic policemen with Jirón López and Medrano Vargas surnames, who in a false checkpoint caused the businessman to stop and thus be able to retain him.

After the events, the last name leader Morales Vega left the country by land to Panama, flew to El Salvador and then to Cuba to finish his journey in Zaragoza, Spain, where he was with his sentimental partner and his mother.

During the process, several parts of the country have been visited where it is presumed that the captors reaped Tony's life, as the investor was known, and then buried him.

It is expected that, if the identity is confirmed, more arrests can be generated by the judicial agents.

    ESPN article from yesterday:

    https://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/i...ead-costa-rica

I'm still not sure who is the top dog over there now nor have I looked into it but so far it seems like business as usual. The only thing I recall over the past years is they tried to roll that guy who won the BBJ that never deposited on the site claiming because he never deposited they didn't have to pay him but the terms of service were very vague with that. After he made a big deal about this happening (as he should) they eventually realized it wasn't worth the bad publicity and paid the man.

They're like "These hookers cost 8 pesos and this rum $1!" and don't figure that at least some of the tax they'd pay in the US goes to mostly uncorrupt cops.
