TicketDisaster caught red-handed allowing scalpers to scoop up thousands of tickets and resell on their own sister site

I always hated Ticketmaster. I found, as a customer, that they always had a pretty bad ticket selection, high prices, and high fees. In addition, their customer service has always sucked.

In 1989, I had a friend who worked there. He told me that he was instructed to leave people holding for at least 10 minutes when they called in, even if he was available to take calls.

"The company determined that people who want to go to a show will wait 10 minutes, while those asking random questions will not," he explained.

Most tickets available on Ticketmaster tend to be in crappy locations, yet not that much cheaper than the more premium locations.

I can't remember the last time I had a satisfying purchase experience with them.

Anyway, there's a new scandal, involving their collusion with scalpers, thanks to CBC Toronto, who sent undercover reporters into a ticket selling conference at Caesars Las Vegas.

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/a-p...gram-1.4828535

    Cliffs:

Ticketmaster usually has a 6-8 ticket limit per person, and supposedly employs security to prevent scalpers from using multiple accounts and/or bots to circumvent this.

However, they've recently been turning a blind eye to such "abuse", because they developed a new, invite-only product called TradeDesk.

    https://tradedesk.ticketmaster.com/

TradeDesk can be used to upload massive numbers of tickets at once for resale, and contains proprietary pricing tools in order to rapidly change the prices on all tickets, based upon audience demand.

Apparently it has been suspected that Ticketmaster has been turning a blind eye to abuse of mass ticket buying on their main site, because those same scalpers are turning around and selling those tickets at a markup through TradeDesk -- which allows Ticketmaster to collect fees TWICE on the same ticket!

CBC sent undercover reporters into a ticket conference at Caesars, and indeed this was verified by Ticketmaster representatives.

We've spent millions of dollars on this tool (TradeDesk). The last thing we'd want to do is get brokers caught up to where they (scalpers) can't sell inventory with us.
If you want to get a good show and the ticket limit is six or eight ... you're not going to make a living on six or eight tickets.

These were statements made by Ticketmaster employees, regarding whether they would thwart scalpers circumventing buying limits, or if TradeDesk would report back to main Ticketmaster if it tickets are being sold which were obtained by bots or multiple accounts.

At the conference, one Ticketmaster employee said that their biggest broker partner has "moved 5 million tickets" through TradeDesk.

It’s Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam when they testified before Congress against Ticketmaster in the 90’s. Probably the greatest thing a rock band has ever done, taking on this shitty company.

Yeah, late 80s feels about right as to when it got fucked. There used to be a thrill to the chase of buying tickets back in the day when I was in high school. Camp out overnight. Fight your way to front of line. They all opened at 10AM, and it was a mad dash to scoop up premium tickets. Then all the fan clubs and pre-sales and other nonsense came in and ruined the whole experience. Now it’s just pure corrupt. You could be first in line and get some crap at back of the floor. Now it’s just drop $800/ticket for first five rows of any show you really want to see or just grab shit seats if you’re just looking to hear music and drink. I don’t even bother looking for when a show goes on sale anymore. I’m just paying a service when I get around to it, and often it goes down the longer you wait depending on the show.

Manziel may only be 6 feet tall, but he has size 15 feet. And he has HUGE hands. I know some NFL scouts so I know what I am talking about.

    Ah, I remember that now.

Yeah, I respected Pearl Jam for that.

TicketDisaster stomped out its only real competition -- Ticketron -- in the late 1980s. Ticketron pretty much ceased to exist after it was acquired in 1990. Here's a 1989 article about Ticketmaster's rise to prominence, at the expense of Ticketron: https://www.nytimes.com/1989/11/26/b...l-tickets.html

Stubhub, of course, is another major player in today's ticket market. They are also heavily utilized by scalpers. However, the difference here is that Stubhub doesn't directly sell tickets for venues like Ticketmaster does, hence no conflict of interest. However, Stubhub has its own set of issues, and you need to know how to play the Stubhub game to get maximum value as a consumer.

Here's an October 2017 article I wrote about baseball tickets in the Stubhub era: http://toddwitteles.com/blog/?p=36

Literally the most corrupt “industry” there is.

They should let bands and sports teams charge what they think they can charge right out of the box office.

The band is makeing like$10 on the ticket and the middle man is makeing like $100 .

Why don't bands ever just sell there own tickests?

Rent out the garden and sell your own fucken tickets..

I’ve been working for ticketmaster a couple months now and you might think I’m shilling for them but they seem to be a decent company to work for.

Theyre getting rid of the resale sites get me in and seatwave and introducing a new fan to fan resale site next month where tickets can only be sold at face value or less.

Scalpers using bots are gonna have a hard time in years to come with the way things are going.

Forgot to mention about the customer service.

You’re probably working off a small sample size Druff but it is true they can throw new starters in on the phones with little training, but if they’re rubbish they don’t last and you’ll find the experienced agents are actually of decent quality.
