Very strange story.
Grant William Robicheaux is an orthopedic surgeon based out of Newport Beach, CA. Prior to the publicity of this story, he was well reviewed online, and well regarded in the medical community. At one point he was the Chief Resident at UC Irvine's medical school.
He is now accused of drugging and raping as many as 1,000 women, and his girlfriend is accused of being his accomplice who fully took part in everything.
This is how it went down:
Since 2015, 38-year-old Robicheaux and his 31-year-old girlfriend, Cerissa Riley, went to various bars and festivals (such as Burning Man) to pick up unsuspecting women to victimize.
These women were not joining them for a freaky threesome. Rather, Riley would approach each victim, gently befriend them, and then eventually introduce them to Robicheaux. Riley would explain that she was Robicheaux's girlfriend, and that he was a respected doctor. When the women would let their guard down, mostly due to the presence of Riley and the couple's clean-cut looks, they would eventually agree to go somewhere private with the couple to "party" with alcohol and/or drugs. At this point, they would spike the drinks, and the women would become incapacitated. Both Robicheaux and Riley would then perform "numerous sex acts" on the women, while they were either unconscious or mostly incapacitated. They would also record it on video, though the videos do not appear to have been uploaded anywhere.
While this was done to as many as 1,000 women over the past 3 years, it appears that each woman was victimized individually, with no one else around.
Surprisingly, none of the drugs used to knock out the women were medical grade, nor does it appear that Robicheaux ever victimized anyone he operated on.
He appears to have been living a double life -- respectable surgeon with a good practice on one side, and rapist on the other.
Riley was actually married during some of this (she got divorced in 2017), but it's not clear if she was already separated when all of the rapes started. Her ex-husband is not accused of any wrongdoing.
More than 1,000 videos were recovered of Robicheaux and Riley raping incapacitated women, though it's possible certain women are in multiple videos.
The most surprising part of all this comes from the police and judicial response to all of this.
Robicheaux was arrested on September 11. However, he's been aware of the accusations against him for a long time. In fact, his apartment was searched in January, where a lot of illegal drugs and a few illegal guns were seized.
Amazingly, Robicheaux was granted bail for just $100,000, a staggeringly low amount for a rich surgeon accused of as many as 1,000 rapes.
It is not clear why they don't see him as a flight risk, as he has a lot of money, and is facing up to life in prison for what he did. Why would bail have been possibly granted here?
