This was a scam from the start. I wouldn't be surprised if this comes out in court soon enough. I think all three people involved came up with this scam . Homeless guy is keeping his mouth shut hoping he still gets his cut.

If he blows the whistle he gets no money and jail.

Yeah, the chick is actually pretty hot. I'm surprised that isn't being discussed more.

The guy is 39 but looks older. She's 28.

He definitely batted out of his league on that one.

But maybe they found scamming in common and fell in love.

Homeless vet, couple allegedly made up story for GoFundMe scam

    https://nypost.com/2018/11/15/homele...-story-report/

The New Jersey couple who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in a viral charity campaign for a homeless man were allegedly working with the vagrant as part of an elaborate ruse, according to a new report.

Prosecutors believe that Mark D’Amico and Kate McClure conspired with homeless man Johnny Bobbitt to create their get-rich-quick scheme in 2017, NBC’s Philadelphia affiliate reported Wednesday.

The couple turned themselves in to authorities Wednesday, but Bobbitt was still at large, the news station said.

According a source who spoke to the news outlet, which said it had a copy of a criminal complaint, all three are expected to face charges of conspiracy and theft by deception for working together to create the ruse. The Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office is expected to make an announcement in the case Thursday, according to multiple reports.

Prosecutors did not immediately return a call for comment, and reps for the couple and Bobbitt were not available.

McClure, 28, and D’Amico, 39, created a GoFundMe page in November 2017, claiming homeless drug addict Bobbitt spent his last $20 to fill up McClure’s empty gas tank after her car broke down on I-95 near Philadelphia.

The charity campaign exploded, raising tens of thousands of dollars from unsuspecting donors in a matter of days — and ultimately shooting up to more than $400,000.

“It has changed my entire outlook about people, my outlook about people has skyrocketed,” McClure said of the donations at the time.

Their plan began to unravel in August of this year, when Bobbitt sued the couple, claiming they were withholding funds raised on the GoFundMe from him.

McClure and D’Amico, both of Florence Township, NJ, accused Bobbitt of being on drugs and refused to pay him until he was clean.

In September, a lawyer for the couple announced that he expected they would both be indicted for their role in the scam — but it was not known that all three of them were suspected in the plot until Wednesday.
LOL...I guess the homeless guy Bobbitt said something when he was interviewed by police that made them suspicious. I guess he won't be receiving that extra $400K from GoFundMe now. Instead they will be getting a 2 to 3 year prison sentence.

They got them. All three arrested.

I guess the homeless guy Johnny Bobbitt won't be getting an extra $400K from GoFundMe?

It may be returned to the victims instead?

Druff should create a competing site and call it GoScamMe.

(UPDATED) New Twist To Homeless Man GoFundMe Story: It Was All A Scam

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyph...ll-a-scam/amp/

The story, it turns out, was fake. The running out of gas? It never happened. That infamous photo? Staged. According to prosecutors, the trio had known each other for about a month before the GoFundMe campaign went viral. Bobbitt was homeless, and he really did hang out at the exit ramp where the photo was taken, and prosecutors believe that McClure and D’Amico may have met him on one of their trips to a nearby casino.
Prosecutors did not reveal how McClure, D’Amico and Bobbitt came up with the idea to scam donors. However, they did note that a similar story had been posted on Bobbitt’s Facebook page when he lived in North Carolina, which law enforcement suggested was not a coincidence.

The scheme was successful, netting the trio nearly $400,000. The money didn’t stay in the account for long. By March of 2018, prosecutors say they had blown nearly all of the fund on a luxury car, trips, jewelry, fancy handbags, and gambling. D’Amico, however, wasn’t worried about their dwindling bank account since they had a book deal was waiting in the wings. But the cracks in their story were already beginning to show.
Today, Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina announced criminal charges against McClure, D’Amico and Bobbitt in the matter, including second degree theft by deception and conspiracy. Second degree crimes in New Jersey carry a potential sentence of 5-10 years in prison.

Katelyn dyed her hair brown, presumably to be harder to recognize. She also looks substantially worse than when this story broke. Maybe the stress of this whole ordeal?

    Her boyfriend looks homeless himself.

I have a feeling the two of them are big degens, and probably chunked off most of the money in casinos. They even met this homeless guy at an offramp near a casino. They probably have a drug issue, too.

Interesting how the homeless guy participated in a scam against the public, and then got re-scammed where he was cheated out of a large part of his proceeds. So when he came forward, he couldn't tell the truth about what really happened, but neither could the couple when they defended themselves. I guess they figured they could rip off a homeless guy because the whole thing was a scam anyway, and he probably wouldn't be credible.

    Oops.

This is why you should never believe viral stories on the internet, and why you especially shouldn't donate money to them.

Reminds me somewhat of how Gamergate figures like Anita Sarkeesian, Brianna Wu, and Zoe Quinn have been reaping big money off Gofundme since claiming to be suffering "harassment" years ago, even though much of that was disproved. But instead of being arrested, they're still celebrated by SJWs everywhere.

"While this type of behavior by an individual is extremely rare, it's unacceptable and clearly it has consequences," said Bobby Whithorne, adding that misuse is rare on GoFundMe.

"Campaigns with misuse make up less than one-tenth of 1% of all campaigns," he said. "We have a zero tolerance policy for fraudulent behavior."

Druff??? Are you trolling my post from 7 weeks ago? I said this was all a scam . Was not hard to figure out when the homeless guy retained a lawyer that it was all a scam. He wanted his money but could not go public. Easy mark . At least give me credit for calling this one wayyyyyyy before today.

Prosecutor: GoFundMe story about helpful homeless man was a hoax

    https://6abc.com/prosecutor-gofundme...-hoax/4689999/

MT. HOLLY, N.J. (WPVI) -- A New Jersey prosecutor says the story that launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for a homeless veteran was all a hoax.

In a news conference on Thursday, Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said the tale was "fictitious" and "formed the basis of a scam."

Coffina said it was, "concocted to compel kind-hearted individuals to contribute to the cause."

"The entire campaign was predicated on a lie," said Coffina. The couple and the homeless man are all under arrest.

The story told by the suspects, 28-year-old Kate McClure, her 39-year-old boyfriend Mark D'Amico, and 39-year-old Johnny Bobbitt Jr., was that McClure ran out of gas on Interstate 95 in November 2017 and Bobbitt helped her by using his last $20 to buy her gas.

But, investigators say, the story was a complete fabrication.

It all allegedly began in October 2017 when McClure and D'Amico discussed "the homeless guy" by the SugarHouse Casino, which the couple frequented.

They went on to discuss how they wanted to help him by providing him with food, clothes, a Nintendo Switch, the possibility of a job and even a house, according to the criminal complaint.

On November 10, 2017, the tale about the encounter on I-95 was posted on the GoFundMe page. Claiming they wanted to "pay it forward," McClure and D'Amico set a goal of raising $10,000 to help Bobbitt get back on his feet.

They went on a media blitz to promote the campaign, and it ultimately raised about $400,000.

However, Coffina said, investigators learned McClure texted a friend less than an hour after the campaign went live saying the story was "completely made up." She did not run out of gas, Coffina said, and Bobbitt did not spend $20 to help her.

She allegedly wrote, "The gas part is completely made up, but the guy isn't. I had to make something up to make people feel bad. So shush about the made up stuff."

The net proceeds were $360,000 after fees, which went into an account controlled by McClure. Bobbitt received $75,000, said Coffina.

However, Coffina said, Bobbitt - a Marine Corp veteran - wanted his fair share and sued the couple back in August, but by then the money was long gone.

In fact, Coffina said, the vast majority of the money was "squandered" by mid-March. McClure and D'Amico bought a car, took trips, bought high-end handbags and hit the casinos.

That lawsuit sparked the investigation which eventually uncovered the entire scheme, according to the prosecutor.

Investigators searched the Florence, New Jersey home of D'Amico and McClure in September after questions arose about what happened to the money they raised for Bobbitt.

Investigators reviewed text messages between the couple, and Coffina said there were thousands of messages about their financial woes, inability to pay bills, and mounting debts.

During one exchange in March, Coffina said McClure "lamented that the pair had less than $10,000 remaining from the donors to GoFundMe."

However, D'Amico allegedly told McClure that the money from a pending book deal would "dwarf" the money generated by the GoFundMe campaign.

Even when the legal action began a few months later, D'Amico allegedly planned to include the developments in the book, which he intended to call "No Good Deed."

Also during the news conference, Coffina said Bobbitt was not taken advantage of, but was fully complicit in the scheme.

All three have been charged with Theft by Deception (second-degree,) and Conspiracy to Commit Theft by Deception (second-degree).

D'Amico and McClure, both of Florence Township, New Jersey, surrendered on Wednesday night. They were processed and released.

Bobbitt, of the Kensington section of Philadelphia, was charged on Wednesday and is awaiting extradition.

All three suspects face 5-10 years behind bars.

Coffina said GoFundMe has cooperated with the investigation, and will be refunding all of the money to 14,347 donors.

If you are committing a crime, don't text people about it.

If you are being investigated, police can get every text message that you sent and received.

The New Jersey couple accused of pilfering a GoFundMe campaign meant to help a homeless vet will “likely be indicted” for the misuse of the funds, the pair’s lawyer wrote in a recent court filing.

Ernest Badway, the lawyer for defendants Kate McClure and Mark D’Amico, asked a Burlington County judge Friday to postpone veteran Johnny Bobbitt’s civil case against them while they’re investigated criminally for possible misuse of the $400,000 donated to Bobbitt last year, the filing shows.

“Since it is expected that one or both of the Defendants will likely be indicted, my firm and I will no longer be able to continue our representation of them in this matter,” Badway wrote in the motion for a stay in the case, which was granted Monday, moving the next proceeding to Dec. 7.

Last week, investigators with a search warrant went to the couple’s Bordentown home and seized a 2015 BMW, several Louis Vuitton bags and “anything else of value,” including jewelry, computer records and financial documents, according to evidence logs submitted with the motion.

Charges have yet to be filed against the couple, and GoFundMe has already vowed to provide Bobbitt, who was recently sleeping under a bridge, the full amount he is owed regardless of the civil case’s outcome. The company recently deposited $20,000 in a bank account set up by Bobbitt’s lawyers to help him out while the case proceeds.

Bobbitt and the couple made national headlines last fall when the struggling addict gave his last $20 to McClure after her car ran out of gas in Philadelphia. But then Bobbitt recently claimed the couple cut him off and refused to give him the remaining money. His lawyers told The Post they blew the cash on lavish shopping sprees, where they purchased Chanel sunglasses, a new iPhone and a collection of Nikes.

The couple originally said there was $150,000 left of the money and they were withholding it because they were concerned Bobbitt would blow the cash on drugs. When Bobbitt filed suit against the couple in August, a judge ordered the couple to turn over what was left of the money but by then, Badway told Bobbitt’s attorneys nothing was left of the $400,000.
    Why would GoFundMe do that?
Out of the goodness of their hearts?

No, they don't want to be regulated by the government.

GoFundMe needs to cap these fucking fundraisers.

If they capped this one at $10,000, which is all they wanted to raise anyway, this whole case could have been avoided. But no, everyone got fucking greedy.

GoFundMe pocketed over $30,000 in fees.

The homeless guy wasted about $75,000.
These two fraudsters stole about $295,000.

And the IRS will come after these people for federal taxes that weren't paid.

Just really seeing this thread for the first time. You keep talking about taxes, IRS, etc. Gifts under $15,000 per person aren’t taxable as they fall under the annual gift exclusion. So unless any one person gave over $15,000 to the gofundme which doubtful there wouldn’t be any tax consequences, and even if there was the tax liability would be on the gifter not the giftee.

Obviously these scumbags are about to get what they deserve but the irs has nothing to do with it.

The $360,000 from GoFundMe went into the checking account of Katelyn M. McClure.

Her boyfriend Mark A. D'Amico also helped spend her share of about $285,000.

Johnny S. Bobbitt received about $75,000.

I don't believe they paid any taxes on this money.

    This is not tax-free money.

They are fucked on just the taxes owed.

These were three idiots who came up with one great idea, but their execution and self-control was piss poor.

100% they would have gotten away with it if they just didn't screw the homeless guy.

They were degenerate gamblers and spenders who blew that guy's share of the cash, and then had no way to pay him what they promised. At that point, they had to hope that he wasn't going to go public with it, which of course he did.

Then it was just a matter of time until it was all discovered.

Gofundme is full of scams and semi-scams. Finding something legit on there is more the exception than the rule.

Often Gofundme campaigns revolve around a claim which is true on the surface, but doesn't require nearly the money being asked for.

    An example:

Let's say I ran a Gofundme related to the H.Pylori bacterial infection with which I was recently diagnosed. It would read like this:

"I was recently diagnosed with a SERIOUS STOMACH INFECTION which has been linked to STOMACH CANCER and lots of other conditions. I am praying every day for my recovery, but unfortunately, the treatment is expensive and I may have to do it multiple times before eradicating the infection. Each treatment can cost as much as $2,000. Please give what you can so I can cure this! I have an 8-year-old son and this terrifies me!"

In reality, each treatment of H.Pylori costs about $20 in medication, but nobody has to know that, right?

Well-meaning people see that, want to feel like they're helping, and thousands of dollars will roll in.

Do I really have a stomach infection which has been linked to stomach cancer? Yes. But I don't need thousands to treat it, or even hundreds.

This type of shit is done all the time on Gofundme. It's a scammer's paradise.
