Damn. Sucks he was given such a great opportunity and still can't get clean. The people who started the GoFundMe should absolutely NOT give the homeless dude the money until he's clean and sober (which he isn't). But it mostly sucks for the couple who are trying to do a good thing for this man and now they're getting hassled because the drug addict is still a drug addict.

Read the article, this couple spent about $200K of his money.

The girl bought a brand new BMW.

Her boyfriend gambled away money in Las Vegas.

They spent a lot of of on expensive vacations.

    Over $400,000.

    Taxes on that money...about $150K to $175K.

Maybe if he's lucky, there would be $50K to $25K left.

The homeless guy needs to hire on attorney and seize the $200K now.

Then stick that fucking couple with a $80K tax bill.

GoFundMe is going to clamp down big time after this shit.

The couple were on the Megyn Kelly today show.

    They act fucking deceptive.

The boyfriend claims there is only $150,000 left.

What did they spend it on?

They put $25,000 in his bank account.
They claim he spent it on drugs.
    A 1999 truck.
    GoFundMe fees.
    Legal fees.

$150K leftover from $400K doesn't sound like a lot unless all taxes have been paid, which they probably weren't.

Next time create a real charity, apply for a 501 (c)(3) type organization, then zero taxes need to be paid.

    No good deed goes unpunished.

From reading the article -- the homeless guy is still on drugs and it appeared part of the stipulation was he wasn't going to be given the money unless he got clean. The homeless guy claimed they spent a bunch of his money, but it wasn't noted that they actually did. The guy said he borrowed $500 to gamble with in Vegas, but he paid it back.

Are we watching the same Megyn Kelly show with them, because this is what I found:

Not sure how or why you think they're acting deceptive or ducking questions. Which question did they not answer? They said they're perfectly fine with a financial analyst or w/e going through their account and figuring out if the money was/wasn't mismanaged. IMO, there's no way in hell he should be given that money, at least not right now while he's still on drugs.

I'm not an attorney (thank god), but isn't there some point where this becomes a criminal fraud issue rather than just a civil matter?

Megyn Kelly should stop doing interviews and just finger herself instead. Everybody would be happier.

She doesn't do her homework and doesn't ask the right questions.

She should've asked them questions like...did you pay taxes on this money?

Look at the guy's face when she asks...did you take any money?

    He answers not one dollar.

    Do you really believe that?

You don't have to be a genius to know he's lying.

I know how these con artists work.

Usually, they get the guy (victim) to pull out large amounts of cash from his own bank account. Then they take almost all the cash.

However, these idiots didn't know what the fuck they were doing. I'm sure they fucked up and spent it themselves, directly from their bank account.

Remember there is only $150,000 left from the $402K that was raised and at the exact same time they receive the money, the couple takes expensive vacations to California, Florida and Las Vegas. Then she buys a brand new BMW. What a fucking coincidence.

    Money corrupts everyone.

If the guy is a life long drug addict who can never keep up with anything, giving him money will 80%+ (being generous) of the time just send him back to drugs. The only reason he'll be stopping is because of legal reasons or tired of being homeless. Money will fix a lot of the reasons which had him quit. The whole thing is just LOL epic fail and I haven't even read it.

I haven't looked into this at all (beyond the article posted here), but my gut feeling is that a lot of the money was indeed stolen.

I'm guessing that the GoFundMe thing was done out of kindness initially, but then when it blew up and became $400,000, the couple felt too tempted to take some of it. They probably rationalized to themselves that he would waste it on drugs anyway (and possibly overdose), and that they deserved some pay for having to manage such a large sum. Then they probably took more and more, perhaps using it as a Full Tilt style "loan", promising themselves to pay it back when he is responsible enough to actually need it.

I think this couple could have shut the entire controversy down by sharing receipts and statements with the media. Instead, they had "no comment" until finally appearing on that interview.

    Something is definitely wrong here.

The correct way to have done this was to set it up as a charity, and then have an ongoing open and transparent accounting of where the money is going. So it could simply be used to support him and buy him necessities (including a car, computer, an apartment, etc), and then once he became clean, start distributing some of the money to him.

This kinda looks like they just had a pile of money sitting there and decided they'd rather spend it on themselves instead of a drug addict.

    WOW...What a surprise...All the $400K is gone.

Couple who raised $400G for homeless man allegedly spent the vast majority of it themselves

    http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/...904-story.html

    Go fund yourself!

The New Jersey couple who raised $400,000 for a homeless man has been accused of blowing through the dough after giving the intended recipient only $75,000.

An attorney for displaced Philadelphia veteran John Bobbitt claims New Jersey residents Kate McClure and Mark D’Amico are unable to honor a judge’s order to put money collected for his client through a GoFundMe page into an escrow account because it’s gone. Bobbitt’s attorney Chris Fallon told ABC News that the plaintiff’s lawyers informed him of the missing cash.

In November, McClure, 28, ran out of gas and Bobbitt came to her aid, walking her to a gas station and handing over all the money he had — $20 — to make sure she got home safe. McClure and her boyfriend were so grateful, they started a GoFundMe page, with a goal of raising $10,000 for the former Marine. The story went viral and was even covered by the BBC. Then things went south.

In an interview with ABC News last week, Bobbitt alleged that McClure and D’Amico, 39, spent thousands of dollars raised in his name to go shopping and take vacations.

D’Amico and McClure had claimed they were holding the remaining money for Bobbitt, whom they say has a drug problem and once went through $25,000 in little more than a week.

WPVI Philadelphia reporter Chad Pradelli tweeted a photo of a BMW in the couple’s driveway Tuesday that Bobbitt suspects D’Amico and McClure bought with money that should be his.

When Bobbitt sued for the money to be returned to him, he said, “I wish it didn’t come to this. I hate that it came to this … I always felt like I was in a weird situation. I didn’t want to be pressuring to get a lawyer or do anything because I didn’t want to seem ungrateful.”

The couple has repeatedly denied all wrongdoing, alternatively claiming that Bobbitt spent $25,000 on drugs in less than two weeks, in addition to paying overdue legal bills and sending money to his family.

On Wednesday, a judge in New Jersey Supreme Court will ask for an accounting of the funds in question.
The couple live in a $200K home in Bordentown, New Jersey.

They should've setup a charity, then immediately apply for 501 (c) (3) status then turn over to attorney to manage and invest. Instead they are going to be liable for all state and federal taxes. At least $150,000+.

Actually, it's going to be up to the homeless guy to decide if he wants to press charges.

If not he could just sue them and take their house.

Then they would be homeless. Justice.

The couple that defrauded the homeless man plan to plead the fifth.

What does that make them? Guilty!

For stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars and lying to a homeless man, they deserve a sentence of at least 5 years in prison.

    I'm sure it's just a small misunderstanding.

The couple wanted to give back the original $20 that the homeless guy gave her and keep the rest of the $400K for themselves.

    Fuck paying it forward.

    Fuck homeless people.

Search warrant carried out at home of New Jersey couple accused of misusing money raised for homeless man

    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nati...906-story.html

A search warrant was carried out Thursday at the home of a New Jersey couple accused of withholding and misspending money from a GoFundMe account created for a homeless good Samaritan.

Investigators were searching Kate McClure and Mark D’Amico’s home one day after a judge ruled that the couple must testify about the money intended to help Johnny Bobbitt.

A BMW in the couple’s driveway was searched and seized.

Video shows authorities outside the home as D’Amico could be seen standing around or sitting with his dog.

The GoFundMe campaign was created for Bobbitt after he helped McClure when she was stranded on a highway in Philadelphia.

A total of $402,706 was donated to the GoFundMe page, which ended up being only $360,000 after company fees were taken out — but Bobbitt said to have only received about $75,000 of it.

The couple will appear in court Monday.

At this time, no charges have been filed in the case.

Couple accused of swiping homeless man's donations will 'likely be indicted'.

    https://nypost.com/2018/09/10/couple...y-be-indicted/

The New Jersey couple accused of pilfering a GoFundMe campaign meant to help a homeless vet will “likely be indicted” for the misuse of the funds, the pair’s lawyer wrote in a recent court filing.

Ernest Badway, the lawyer for defendants Kate McClure and Mark D’Amico, asked a Burlington County judge Friday to postpone veteran Johnny Bobbitt’s civil case against them while they’re investigated criminally for possible misuse of the $400,000 donated to Bobbitt last year, the filing shows.

“Since it is expected that one or both of the Defendants will likely be indicted, my firm and I will no longer be able to continue our representation of them in this matter,” Badway wrote in the motion for a stay in the case, which was granted Monday, moving the next proceeding to Dec. 7.

Last week, investigators with a search warrant went to the couple’s Bordentown home and seized a 2015 BMW, several Louis Vuitton bags and “anything else of value,” including jewelry, computer records and financial documents, according to evidence logs submitted with the motion.

Charges have yet to be filed against the couple, and GoFundMe has already vowed to provide Bobbitt, who was recently sleeping under a bridge, the full amount he is owed regardless of the civil case’s outcome. The company recently deposited $20,000 in a bank account set up by Bobbitt’s lawyers to help him out while the case proceeds.

Bobbitt and the couple made national headlines last fall when the struggling addict gave his last $20 to McClure after her car ran out of gas in Philadelphia. But then Bobbitt recently claimed the couple cut him off and refused to give him the remaining money. His lawyers told The Post they blew the cash on lavish shopping sprees, where they purchased Chanel sunglasses, a new iPhone and a collection of Nikes.

The couple originally said there was $150,000 left of the money and they were withholding it because they were concerned Bobbitt would blow the cash on drugs. When Bobbitt filed suit against the couple in August, a judge ordered the couple to turn over what was left of the money but by then, Badway told Bobbitt’s attorneys nothing was left of the $400,000.
    Why would GoFundMe do that?
Out of the goodness of their hearts?

No, they don't want to be regulated by the government.

GoFundMe needs to cap these fucking fundraisers.

If they capped this one at $10,000, which is all they wanted to raise anyway, this whole case could have been avoided. But no, everyone got fucking greedy.

GoFundMe pocketed over $30,000 in fees.

The homeless guy wasted about $75,000.
These two fraudsters stole about $295,000.

And the IRS will come after these people for federal taxes that weren't paid.

GoFundMe is coughing up the remainder of the money for two reasons:

    1) It's in their own terms of service that people will be "protected" in situations like these, and they would look awful if they didn't uphold their own end of the bargain. (Plus, they could be sued.)

    2) It's great PR for them to make this right, and they can easily afford it.

The truth is that GoFundMe is full of scams, but usually the victims are the donors, and they have little visibility into how the money ends up being used (or why it was needed).

I know he played cash games in Philadelphia and at the Borgata in Atlantic City.

How high did he play and how much money did he lose?
