Serial killer going after sleeping people at Malibu-area campsites?

On June 22, 35-year-old Tristan Beaudette was shot in the head while he slept at a Malibu-area campsite. He was next to his two young daughters, aged 2 and 4, who were not harmed.

There is no indication that there was any motive for the shooting, and it's unlikely that anyone who knew Beaudette would have known he was at the campsite.

Turns out that there have been several shootings at Malibu Creek State Park over the past few years, including some which involved shotguns being fired at cars at close range where people were sleeping.

    https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/l...486591251.html

It is unclear if Beaudette was killed by a shotgun, or a different kind of gun. It would seem it was more likely a pistol, as he was shot once in the head (though it was also reported he was shot in the upper chest, so it's unclear which one s accurate).

It is interesting that the killer had at least a tiny bit of a conscience, as he did not harm the two children. But sometimes even serial killers don't have the heart to kill kids.

    They finally got him.

Anthony Rauda, a homeless guy living in Malibu Creek Park, was arrested for burglary after he stole food from campers there and was seen with a rifle. They then connected him to the murders.

    https://heavy.com/news/2019/01/anthony-rauda/

There were as many as 8 shootings in the area, though only Tristan Beaudette was killed.

The motive for these shootings is unclear. They appear to be random.

Beaudette's wife is suing LA County for $90 million for not publicizing the shootings well. I agree that these were surprisingly kept quiet, given the scary and random nature of the shootings, as well as the fact that they all occurred around the same location, even if no one was killed before Beaudette.

Also, he's one of the few homeless guys (aside from Jewdonk) with a Linkedin and website, though the website has been down for several years.

Interesting fallout from this. Remember how I noted that these shootings were kept surprisingly quiet, given that they looked serial, and a large number of people from LA visited the area routinely?

Well, turns out that was no accident.

A LA Sheriff's detective tried to get the department to issue a warning about this, but his superiors refused. When he kept pressing the matter, he was allegedly punished by having his detective status stripped, and transferred out to the "less prestigious" Newhall-area location, about 50 miles away.

He's suing the department. There is a separate civil suit by the wife of the murdered man, for the same reason.

What a clusterfuck. At the time, I really wondered why this was so under-publicized, both by the county and the media.

    BUMP

The guy is a total psycho. He attacks deputies after court when he doesn't like the way the hearing went. He's been sentenced to over 3 years for those attacks. The murder and attempted murder trials are still ongoing.

How is this guy not majorly restrained during these proceedings?

If there's anyone who deserves the death penalty...

    Also, regarding the lawsuits...

James Royal's lawsuit agaist the LA Sherriff's Department (LASD) is still ongoing. Royal alleges that they refused to warn the public about the serial killings, and when he pressured them to do so, they transferred him far away to the Santa Clarita station as punihsment.

Sergeant Tui Wright, Royal's supervisor, filed a separate lawsuit. His was settled in 2020. Wright alleged that they punished him the same way they punished Royal -- by moving him to a station far away, in this case West Hollywood. Wright retired early rather than accept the transfer. It is interesting that this lawsuit was settled, as presumably LASD knew that they really had retaliated against Wright here. Apparently both Wright and Royal were forced to go to a meeting and tell city officials that the Sherriff had determined that these shootings were not serial in nature, which of course turned out to be incorrect.

Finally, sadly the lawsuit of the murder victim's widow was dismissed in 2021. She claimed he wouldn't have ever gone camping in Malibu, nor taken his kids there, had the public been warned about the shootings. Despite clear evidence that LASD did cover up the danger and seemed obsessed with not declaring it a serial shooting situation, apparently that point is moot. The judge ruled that LASD owes "no duty of care" regarding warning the public in situations like these, and also the victim never attempted to contact LASD before going, regarding the safety of the campsite. Therefore, it was ruled that they did not lie to him or give him incorrect info.

I feel LASD should owe a duty of care to the public to give sufficient warning about a serial killer operating in a public camping area. However, apparently California law does not agree.

    Sad!

It's weird. Some people get their jollies off on this but it's very unsavoury.

About 4 weeks ago, Anthony Rauda was sentenced to 119 years in prison for the murder of Tristan Beaudette. Strangely, he was found not guilty for 7 other murder attempts in Malibu Creek State Park.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/anthony...ek-state-park/

It turns out Rauda was on probation at the time of his arrest. His probation was for possessing a loaded gun, after having previously been convicted of possessing explosives. Maybe not the right guy to put on probation?

    LOL California justice system

    Awesome follow-up...

Courts have routinely ruled LE has no duty to protect and the citizenry has no right to protection from LE. It's not just California
