Thread: Did Sam Kinison really talk to God moments before his death?

    Did Sam Kinison really talk to God moments before his death?

    Sam Kinison died in 1992, driving to Laughlin from a show there. He was in Needles, California at the time of the accident, just minutes away from Laughlin, and was hit head on by a 17-year-old drunk driver. It was ironic that Kinison, who had a major drug and alcohol issue, was actually driving sober when killed by someone else driving drunk.

    Anyway, a friend, Carl Labove, was following him in a van at the time of the accident. Sam was conscious and did not appear to have any major external injuries, and said he felt okay. Carl convinced him to come to the van and lie down while the police were on their way, and Sam agreed.

    While in the van, Sam suddenly had a conversation with an invisible person or being. He said, "I don't want to die, I don't want to die", and then waited as the person "answered" him. Then he responded, "But why", and again waited for a response. Sam's final words were, "Okay, okay, okay", with the final okay sounding quiet and accepting. Immediately after the final "okay", Sam fell unconscious and died.

    It was later determined that he suffered massive internal injuries from the accident, which weren't immediately apparent by looking at him, and that he only had minutes to live.

    On a side note, it turned out that he had banged Labove's wife and impregnated her three years earlier, so Labove's toddler daughter was actually Sam's. But that wasn't figured out until 2011, because the girl resembled Sam a lot, and then a DNA test proved he was her dad.

    Shortly after his death, Ozzy Osbourne stated that he felt Sam really was talking to God, who told him that he was about to die, and that he was going to a better place.

    While this conversation could have easily been all in Sam's head, it is interesting because Sam felt okay and was unaware that he had suffered internal injuries which were about to kill him. So either this was his body's way of telling his brain to let him die at peace, or some higher power really was talking to him and explaining that he was about to go.

    I'm sure the atheists here will laugh at this story, but I do find it interesting, and wonder what Sam thought he was talking to, and if it was in his head, how he knew that his death was minutes away -- so much that he died immediately after the final "okay" accepting his fate.

    I bring this up now because I have a friend who used to tour with Kinison, and he sent me an old video of him and Sam, and it made me recall this story.

    No appeal to mystical occurance needed to expain what is reported here. People on the verge of death because their brain is starved of oxygen are frequently observed hallucinating by talking to someone who isn’t there. Kinison suffered heart failure from the impact with the steering wheel (because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and had a pre-existing heart condition).

    It's very common for people who are dying to get "visits" from spirits, ghosts, dead friends, god, whatever. It's probably just hallucinations, but they are very common. anyone who works in a hospice will confirm it's super common. my own dad, who died a very slow and painful death, told me that his dead grandma flew to our house in a crop duster and talked with him one night (he had trouble laying down/sleeping because the pain was so bad, so he would just stand in the kitchen leaning on the counter) the dude was still lucid, not insane. he was pretty drugged up, he just matter of factly was like, "son... my grandma flew here last night and visited me." it was fucked up.

    no, i'm kinda pissed that my family didn't keep the farm and I have to live in a city filled with neighbors and work 50 hours for a brown jew and i don't hve a crop duster

    I knew almost verbatim what your post was going to say when I saw the title because I remembered that anecdote and his last words from when it happened. I also found it really interesting, if it occurred. I remember driving through Needles like a year or two after it happened and asking the locals at a gas station if they knew where the crash occurred and none seemed to even know what the hell I was talking about, which I found strange considering he was pretty famous at the time and their town, from what I remember, seemed basically desert and gas stations and I just assumed they’d know about it.

    I always wondered if his friend might have made up that story to comfort his family. Kinison’s father was a Pentecostal preacher, his brother and Sam himself had followed their father into preaching before turning to comedy. I have no idea if his parents were still alive at the time, but I recall thinking given he had led such a debauch lifestyle in his latter years with the drugs and porn stars and such, that his friend might have understood that his family would be concerned about him dying so quickly while living the life he had in his last years, and embellished the story to bring them comfort. That was always kind of my personal guess. My father is quite religious. If I died at like the Bunny Ranch doing blow with a couple hookers, my friends would understand to tell my father I passed away from cardiac arrest on a treadmill or something if they could lie about it without anyone knowing. In this case, his friend was the only witness.

So one is left to be open minded, or to take a factional stance, and if the latter then that sometimes leads to condemning anyone who takes the “opposite” stance, a lazy manoeuvre displayed in a couple of above posts.

    But it *is* possible to induce someone into hallucinating using drugs, electrical stimulation of the brain, and even magnetic stimulation.

    Well said. There are many accounts of near death and return from death accounts. You will find those who embrace and those who discount. Everyone has their own opinion.

    Through the years, I have witnessed many being a nurse. I believed in God and the afterlife from a distance, but only now find pursuing faith as a lifestyle brings me peace. Working to find peace within yourself, whatever you attribute it to, is worth it.

    I agree, which typically disinguishes me from atheists who rail against faith. Because I know people whose loves wouldnbe unhinged and self-destructive without it. The issue is what kind of faith one pursues. If it’s one based on compassion, I support it. But if it’s based on fear and a legalist reading of religious texts, I don’t.

    I've heard the book his brother wrote about him was pretty good, I also heard/read somewhere that Sam was bisexual, which was odd given some of his bits.

    I liked Sam a lot as a comedian - his material definitely got weaker but his first album and early Letterman appearances were great.
