It was ironic that Kinison, who had a major drug and alcohol issue, was actually driving sober when killed by someone else driving drunk.
Anyway, a friend, Carl Labove, was following him in a van at the time of the accident. Sam was conscious and did not appear to have any major external injuries, and said he felt okay. Carl convinced him to come to the van and lie down while the police were on their way, and Sam agreed.
While in the van, Sam suddenly had a conversation with an invisible person or being. He said, "I don't want to die, I don't want to die", and then waited as the person "answered" him. Then he responded, "But why", and again waited for a response. Sam's final words were, "Okay, okay, okay", with the final okay sounding quiet and accepting. Immediately after the final "okay", Sam fell unconscious and died.
It was later determined that he suffered massive internal injuries from the accident, which weren't immediately apparent by looking at him, and that he only had minutes to live.
On a side note, it turned out that he had banged Labove's wife and impregnated her three years earlier, so Labove's toddler daughter was actually Sam's. But that wasn't figured out until 2011, because the girl resembled Sam a lot, and then a DNA test proved he was her dad.
Shortly after his death, Ozzy Osbourne stated that he felt Sam really was talking to God, who told him that he was about to die, and that he was going to a better place.
While this conversation could have easily been all in Sam's head, it is interesting because Sam felt okay and was unaware that he had suffered internal injuries which were about to kill him. So either this was his body's way of telling his brain to let him die at peace, or some higher power really was talking to him and explaining that he was about to go.
I'm sure the atheists here will laugh at this story, but I do find it interesting, and wonder what Sam thought he was talking to, and if it was in his head, how he knew that his death was minutes away -- so much that he died immediately after the final "okay" accepting his fate.
I bring this up now because I have a friend who used to tour with Kinison, and he sent me an old video of him and Sam, and it made me recall this story.
