Extremely weird encounter at Rio front desk

I just busted the $1100 Mega Satellite to the $10k O8 (lol at the structure, btw), and was on my way back to my room.

I figured I'd stop by the Rio front desk quickly to get a few waters, which they hand out for free. The customer at the front desk, a guy who appeared to be around 50, immediately recognized me and called me by name. He immediately told me that he listens to radio, and in fact had already listened to three of the four hours of today's show. He went on to talk about the "More Rake is Better" billboard, and suggested PFA also put up a billboard.

He said his name was Eric, which was on his ID, but I couldn't see his last name. He said that after he checked in, he would "tell something interesting" to me.

I asked the woman at the front desk for waters, but she didn't understand for some reason.

"Get this man some water, he's Seven Stars!", said Eric.

She completed Eric's check-in and was on the way to get my bottles.

"Take a look at my last name, tell me if you remember it from about a decade ago", he said, showing me his ID.

    It read, "Eric Parkinson".

    Don't recognize that name?

    Let me jog your memory:

    http://www.adrforum.com/domaindecisions/616302.htm

He went on a domain squatting spree in 2005, registering every domain name of every bracelet winner and/or prominent poker player. I won my bracelet on July 4, 2005, and he registered toddwitteles.com on July 5, 2005.

Here's another article about him, involving a 2007 squatting situation with someone unrelated to poker: http://www.post-gazette.com/business...s/200705180322

At first I tried to ask him to simply return to the domain name to me, but he quickly demanded $1500. I told him to fuck off, at which point he threatened to put porn on the domain to get back at me (though he never actually did it).

I attempted to get the domain back through the ADR Arbitration process, but they had a ridiculous requirement to prove a "trademark" on the domain name, meaning that I was fucked because I hadn't trademarked the name Todd Witteles.

The arbitrator did rule that I successfully proved "opportunistic bad faith registration", as well as the facts that Parkinson had a pattern of ongoing bad faith registrations, as well as the fact that he had no rights to the name Todd Witteles.

Unfortunately, because I could not show a trademark, nor did I qualify for a "common law" trademark (which I tried in vain to assert), I lost the arbitration. I also spent $1100 in fees on the whole thing, even though I did all the work myself.

Around 2012, the domain fell back into my hands due to an oversight on Parkinson's part, which is why I have it now.

When he showed me who he was, I rolled my eyes and pulled my head back, and he laughed.

I asked, "So wait, you listen to my show?"

"I listen all the time," he replied. "As I told you, I even listened to today's. And I've lurked on your forums for 10 years."

Then he said, "See you around", tapped me on the shoulder in a friendly way, and walked off.

    Unbelievable.

Was this the domain Cmoney got back for you?

In reading your story if I had to analyze your state of mind, you were likely stunned when he showed you his name. But as you made it to your room you got pissed remembering the anger and money this guy caused you ten years ago. Then you got really pissed when you thought about the patronizing slap on the shoulder. I think the slap on the shoulder and the "see you around pal" comment was meant to ridicule you. Remember he is a squatter, which means he is a snake, so he basically took the opportunity to get under your skin.

Good thing you are not a drinker, there is no doubt in my mind you'd be approaching him later tonight and it would probably get loud if you had a few in you.

this is actually a legit great story.

It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

What a weird story. It feels unlikely that someone brazen enough to introduce himself and pat you on the shoulder given your history would also lurk for a decade without posting. He seems to have no problem being a bit of a troll when someone didn’t pay by pointing websites to porn and whatnot. Just hard to imagine that guy having the restraint not to bust your balls here if he’s that active of a listener and lurker to have already listened to that day’s show. Be great if he popped up and ended up being one of the trolls you could never pin down.

Eric you must ask Todd to forgive you for what you've done. Just as you would with other people, after saying you are sorry you must ask to be forgiven.

I thought the same, but he had enough knowledge of the show to where I believe he really listens. He even knew that day's show was 4 hours and told me he had listened to three already.

I saw on his license where he lived and no unknown trolls are from around there.

here are the typical methods used by a con artist/criminal as per "Gift of Fear"

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gift_of_Fear

Forced Teaming. This is when a person implies that they have something in common with their chosen victim, acting as if they have a shared predicament when that isn't really true. Speaking in "we" terms is a mark of this, i.e. "We don't need to talk outside... Let's go in."

Charm and Niceness. This is being polite and friendly to a chosen victim in order to manipulate him or her by disarming their mistrust.

Too many details. If a person is lying they will add excessive details to make themselves sound more credible to their chosen victim.

Typecasting. An insult is used to get a chosen victim who would otherwise ignore one to engage in conversation to counteract the insult. For example: "Oh, I bet you're too stuck-up to talk to a guy like me." The tendency is for the chosen victim to want to prove the insult untrue.

Loan Sharking. Giving unsolicited help to the chosen victim and anticipating they'll feel obliged to extend some reciprocal openness in return.

The Unsolicited Promise. A promise to do (or not do) something when no such promise is asked for; this usually means that such a promise will be broken. For example: an unsolicited, "I promise I'll leave you alone after this," usually means the chosen victim will not be left alone. Similarly, an unsolicited "I promise I won't hurt you" usually means the person intends to hurt their chosen victim.

Discounting the Word "No". Refusing to accept rejection.

I count 3 actions in the encounter: Forced Teaming, Charm & Niceness, Unsolicited Promise

I don't think it was an accident that he chose to work at the Rio, after he squatted on so many poker players domains. He obviously wants to have these sort of encounters with former poker players at the WSOP whom he messed with years ago. Maybe he also still has some domains and is hoping to get some cash for them by negotiating giving up the domains in person.

Also, I am sure he outed himself to Druff with the intention of getting this kind of attention, so I don't think it is a big deal.

So this guy tries to rip you off then 10 years later randomly meets you & says "Hey buddy, how you doing?" Guy has a pair of balls on him or something else is going on here. At least you got some water out of the deal.

He wasn't trying to rip Druff off, but skating the rules. I am in the technology business and have seen this many times, have had clients spend up to 100k to get their domain back. I have never done this and have "fired" clients that have tried it.

Yeah, this guy is a grey area crook. The demand of $1500 says rip off to me.
