Trip Report - Frankfurt.

Hello friends and old school peeps.... This TR is in sections as I can only upload 12 images per post.

Just got back from Frankfurt, Germany. Basically a few things fell into place before going: I got offered a new job with a big company, my girlfriend got a promotion, and it was her stepdads 60th. Before you read, I'd like to point out that most of the places I went to were outside of the main city and in some of the suburbs that I'd heard good things about. I lived close to down town Frankfurt for 6 months, so I'd seen all the main tourist bullshit before. I wanted to see the "real" Germany, if you will.

We decided to take the ferry from Dover. Honestly, the boat is much less stressful than flying. No bullshit security, no weighing of suitcases etc. I thought the 2am Boat would be pretty empty, big lol. It was pretty packed.









If you've never been on the ferry before, it's basically like a mini cruiser. Restaurants, arcades, shops and other stuff on board. Free wifi and you can go out on the deck and smoke. At this time of night though, most people just found some seats and slept.







So on the first day of arrival, we dumped the bags, and went for a walk in the woods in a rural suburb of Frankfurt. The mission was simple - we had heard about this hidden gem of a restaurant in the woods that sells wild boar Frankfurter schnitzels. This day in particular was very hot and it didn't take long to get hungry and thirsty.

This place was God. Well worth the walk.









The next day, we went to the annual German-Italian festival, in a town close to my girlfriends family. It was so uncomfortably crowded and the heat made it worse, but the things on offer included freshly made pizzas, pastas, bratwursts, specialist beer/wine etc, in addition to the usual festival antics such as live music.
It was quite difficult to sit down as it was so damn busy, so we decided to just have a beer and a quick bite to eat before making an exit into the city.






We also visited a town called Bad Nauheim, which is apparently where Elvis was stationed when he was doing his military service. They have even named a street after him on the road where he was based. The town itself is quite pleasant. Lots of designer and speciality shops as well as a traditional market.

Since the weather was so good, we decided to do a river cruise on the Rhine. I must say that I've done a shit ton of these in my time, and this one ranks up there with the best of them. Great views of the old style architecture and great food on the boat. We heard that you can potentially boat hop on short river cruises all the way into Holland. We obv didn't go for that, but the fact that you can do that is pretty damn cool. I really recommend this if ever you are in and around the Rhineland. Some awesome things to see.








This next few are from a medieval market we stumbled across. There was plenty going on here; archery lessons, hand made goods, live music and magic shows, bbqs, handmade crafts and medieval style clothing. The live music towards the end of the night was actually pretty decent. As a metalhead, I can appreciate a bit of modern folk. The dykes on the BBQ didn't disappoint, either.




This was a grilled wild boar neck steak. They season it in beer and probably the best boar I've tasted. The buns supplied were too small, but the meat was just so good.




The bar at this place was amazing. I am normally a cider drinker in the UK, but, in Germany, the beer really is something else. In the middle is cherry beer, which was orgasmic. The ladies drinks are to the side - one is apple mead the other elderflower wine. I had to limit myself because it was so hot and this shit tasted like liquid gold. One thing about proper German beers is they are not too gassy, so you could easily drink it like water.




The next pics are probably from the most homo part of the trip. We did not plan to go to the "Rose Museum" and it was spontaneous. My girlfriends aunt just built a new house. The house has been finished for 2 months but the land has no fences. The locals used to use their land as a short cut to get to town quicker, and some of them still do. I suggested planting roses to try to put them off cutting through and they liked the idea. So off we went.





Honestly, not my thing. It's cool if you like roses, I guess. I admire that they are trying to display and offer for sale every type of rose species they possibly can, but meh.

Next set of pics is from my potential stepfathers 60th. The place they hired was very old school. Old memorabilia and family ancestry pics from the guy who owned it donned the walls. Honestly, there wasn't much to do here other than get hammered, so that's what I did. I can't remember much about the night as it was an open bar + buffet. Must have been a good night, as I found on my phone random pictures with Germans I had obv befriended.











When you have a hangover, of course its a great idea to jump in an old skool 4x4 to go onto some farmland. Her uncle is pretty awesome. Their farm has been in their family for generations right up until last year when it was force purchased by the government for a "hotel", which has now become a refugee centre. However the old bastard refuses to give up the actual farmlands as that's his livelihood, and good luck to him!. I went out with him to check on his crops, but honestly I just wanted to ride in this.






50+ years old, so old it predates the "Audi" name. Thing runs like a champ. Enjoyed it.

Had such a good time that we've decided to make the drive over a regular thing.

Yes, that's why I took a picture of it. Joke prices. You are paying for the size of the bottle, not the actual volume.

LOL, its actually GBP - which is even more of a joke. I've no idea why anyone would want or need a 4.5l bottle this much.

sorry i thought it was a 2litre bottle those big mommas are pretty sweet still a little pricy.
