My understanding is you are legally obligated to show up at your place of work but because they won't let you do anything you spend most of the day sitting out in the garden, ergo garden leave.
Not quite. It’s the ideal spot of getting paid but not going in to work. Officially you have to be available to work (but it’s rare to be asked to), and you’re not allowed to get another job (because you’re still getting paid).
