TMobile and Sprint agree to merger

It has not been approved yet, but they agreed to do it.

    https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...t-and-verizon/

If successful, the merger would create a big #3 cell carrier in the US, only slightly behind existing giants AT&T and Verizon.

TMobile was always a cheaper option, but their customer service sucked, and their network often isn't very good in rural areas. This merger should improve that, but it's unclear what will happen after this merger.

Personally I hate TMobile. While AT&T and Verizon definitely have their customer service problems, they pale in comparison to TMobile, which basically tells you to eat shit if you have any complaints.

T Mobile blows. I used to have a stored value SIM card from T Mobile that I'd use in the USA. I'd be in Vegas in the middle of a casino and I'd get no signal and have to wander around or go outside. Or I'd be in someone's house even in a large city and the signal would be spotty and would disappear if I were down in a basement. I finally junked the thing and ate the remaining stored value.

Garbage pile merging with garbage pile is still garbage pile. Worry is overall rates will go up. There are so many cheap plans not associated with that garbage, not likely will be greatly affected.

Dirty little secret.. Sprint needs this merger they are in a financial clusterfuck of a situation and have been for awhile.. Techwise makes no sense Sprints technology is same as Verizons while ATT and TMob use the other major protocol (which is also commonly seen overseas as well)

    Merger is:

Better to let Sprint and that fucker Paul go

I was introduced to TMobile in 2003 by my boss at work, probably just months before I quit.

He brought in some woman who had a "special deal" on cell phones. I believe she was friends with him (or possibly a relative), and obv she got commission for every signup.

This was back in the day when independent cell phone stores would get a pretty hefty commission for each new signup, and some of them gave some form of under-the-table rakeback in order to entice people to do so, such as cash, accessories, etc. I forget what she offered, but it seemed like a great deal, and I went for it (along with others in the office).

At first I was fine with TMobile. Their coverage, at least in the LA area, didn't seem worse than my prior phone with Sprint. I did have to give up my cool, customized phone # I had with Sprint, and take a rather generic TMobile number (there was no cross-carrier number porting back then), but aside from that, things were fine.

After a year or so, I was happy enough with TMobile to where I ended up buying a new, better phone, which had a requirement of a 2-year agreement. (This was very common in the mid-2000s.)

The phone had a 14-day return period.

On Day 25, it suddenly stopped working properly. Reception dropped immensely. Where I once had good reception, I had poor reception. Where I once had okay or poor reception, I had no reception. I had a friend with the identical phone on TMobile, and his phone worked 100% fine when we were in the same room. So I knew the phone just crapped out, and it wasn't a network issue.

I called TMobile and they told me that my warranty covered this, and they'd be sending me a new phone. But there was a catch! It would be a refurbished phone!

I tried over and over to explain how unfair this was, and how I had just agreed to a 2-year contract to get this phone, plus paid good money for it, and then I'm getting a refurbished one in its place after just 25 days. I begged them to just send me a new phone, given that it was a difference of 11 days. Not only did they refuse, but they treated me like I was insane to be unhappy about this. I ended up talking to two managers up (the manager of the rep's manager), and at one point in the call, the guy openly mocked me. I asked him, "Is it TMobile's policy to mock the customer?", to which he replied, "Yes, it is our policy to mock the customer when he refuses to take no for an answer."

I reported this to corporate, and of course they did nothing and didn't look into it.

I ended up getting 4 different refurbished phones, all of which had some kind of major problem. On the 4th phone, which worked aside from abruptly turning itself off in the middle of calls at times, I finally gave up and just kept it. I called TMobile and asked if they could finally just send me a new one after 4 failed refurbished phones. Nope. Their policy was that I had to keep replacing it with other refurbished phones. Fucking nightmare.

When my contract was up (I think 2006), I quit and never came back.

    Fast forward to 2017.

Mark Klang was praising TMobile on Twitter, and I responded by calling them customer-unfriendly assholes. I got a response from the official TMobile Twitter account, telling me that "things have changed since 2006", and that they were inviting me to try them again.

I knew I was dealing with a social media monkey, so I wasn't impressed, but I continued the conversation for lulz. I asked if this exact same thing happened today, would they again only provide a refurbished phone, and give me no kind of credit or concession to make up for what happened? The guy on the account reluctantly admitted that, yes, that's still their policy.

T Mobile was always the best deal, and gives you free WIFI on American and I believe Southwest as well which is nice. The issue is there coverage it awful in rural areas. There were times I would drive through parts of north Florida or the midwest and not only get no bars, it would simple say "No Service". One time in Texas I drove like two hours with no service. I canceled shortly thereafter, that was like 2015, maybe things have changed.

If you live in a city and don't travel much T Mobile is by far the best deal.

Also complaining about your experience with a cell carrier 12 years ago is like saying you don't like Amazon Prime Video because when you tried to order and return a book on Amazon.com 10 years ago you had a bad customer service experience.

That's why I laughed when the TMobile Twitter monkey admitted to me that the exact same thing would happen in 2018 if I bought a bad phone through them.
