Also, another old man has been arrested for a brutal murder in the 70s.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...=.e6029f223be7

Ray Vannieuwenhoven killed a couple in their 20s in 1976, while they were camping. He shot the boyfriend, then chased down and raped the girl, before killing her as well.

They recently matched the DNA with the same methods used to catch the Golden State Killer, and got him to voluntarily give a sample of DNA by going to his door and pretending to take a survey, and having him lick an envelope to close it. The DNA was a match, and he was arrested. He's 82 years old.

While we've all been thinking about a virus, Joseph James DeAngelo has offered to plead guilty and take a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/04/u...ler-trial.html

He's doing this to avoid the death penalty, which prosecutors are seeking.

Amazingly, prosecutors are refusing to take this deal, which is stupid. I have to think they're refusing this for political purposes.

California governor Gavin Newsom has stopped executions in the state, even though the death penalty remains on the books. Given that Newsom is likely to be reelected, it will be January 2027 at minimum when executions are reinstated, and even then, an execution takes decades to happen in California. Also, given the Democrat-dominated California legislature (which will remain blue for a very long time, perhaps forever), I am doubting that the death penalty will ever function swiftly.

Given that DeAngelo is 74 years old and doesn't appear to be in great health, it is highly unlikely that he could possibly be put to death before dying naturally.

So why not take the slam dunk life-without-parole plea bargain, and spare the families of victims from re-living all of this -- even 35-to-50 years later?

This is actually the most useful application of the death penalty. It scares the guilty into plea bargaining to life-without-parole. Without the death penalty, the most heinous criminals have a freeroll to plead not guilty and hope for either a lesser sentence or an acquittal -- which they sometimes get!

Not to mention that huge cost of a trial. This is why California is so fucked. They literally do the opposite of anything that makes sense 98% of the time.
It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

California is so fucked and yet it is one of the main economic, technological and cultural powerhouses of the country. 40 million people and counting. They must be doing something right.

I don't know why they won't take this deal though.

    bump.

He plead guilty yesterday to 13 murders and 13 kidnappings and confessed to 161 other murders/rapes that weren't chargeable. - (a day after the HBO docuseries came out)

The prosecutors explained that if they went to trial to pursue the death penalty he'd probably die before being convicted and definitely before being executed - better to just officially convict him so the victims know he will die guilty.

They held court in a ball room at a college to make room for all the victims and family of victims to attend and social distance.

I guess it's also possible that he realized he would get caught if he continued, perhaps after seeing the "other" Night Stalker in California (Richard Ramirez) get caught a year earlier.
Remains the most interesting thing to me - hard to believe that someone with that pathology could just (seemingly) give it up.

I'll be Gone in the Dark on HBO premiered recently related to this, good so far.

To add to what Druff said, sometimes for rapists the urge dies off along with the testosterone after middle age hits.

This is what I posted 2 years ago regarding why he stopped his raping/murdering in his 40s. I still believe it to likely be one of these factors:

It is still not clear why he stopped his spree in 1986. Some feel that he had a near-failure in one of his invasion murders, where it seemed one of the male victims (Gregory Sanchez) fought back, and perhaps injured him. After that murder, DeAngelo stopped for 5 years, committing one more rape and murder (the victim was an 18-year-old girl), and then stopping completely. So the possible theories for him stopping:

    - He got spooked by the fight with Sanchez, and decided to quit his crime spree, fearing his capture or death was inevitable. He committed one more rape/murder five years later against a relatively easy target when he couldn't help himself, then stopped completely.

    - At the age of 36, he felt that the physical demands of the break-ins and murders were getting too tough, and decided to call it quits, especially after the Sanchez situation.

    - DeAngelo's testosterone levels declined with age, which lowered his drive to commit these crimes.

It should be noted that decreased testosterone levels are associated with a drop in desire to commit any violent crime (not just rape), as it also tends to bring a drop in aggression.

This is both why men over 40 commit far less violent crime than those under 40, and why women especially commit relatively little violent crime, and when they do it often involves a male accomplice.

Some of those theories are probably in play but it's hard to imagine it being cut and dry.

The ones that seemingly up and quit (ie. Zodiac) are especially interesting. I could be wrong but DeAngelo easily has the biggest jacket of rapes/murders of any who just stopped.

Hollywood has conditioned us as to how these serial killers function but who really knows.

There have been a handful of seemingly 'one and dones' that got popped through recent DNA registries. Those cases probably are guys who got spooked etc.

I love knowing that tons of killers, rapists etc. are liv8ng in fresh fear due to this development.

Maybe he will decide he's bored while in prison, and reveal some more details. Apparently he wouldn't reveal why he stopped the crimes, which is odd. That would point to it being something he's ashamed of, such as almost getting beaten down by that one Gregory victim, and getting scared to continue after that.

That actually seems like the most likely explanation. He went dark for 5 years after that double-murder where he was almost stopped, and his only victim after that was a little 18-year-old girl on the street by herself. That really looks like someone who was afraid to continue his previous M/O, and when he was facing the urge to rape again, he picked a target he knew was least likely to be able to fight back.

We may never find out though.

He also started a family (which is fucked up) so he may simply have had less opportunity.

The book (I'll be Gone in the Dark) is fucking creepy as hell.

Pretty incredible that he evaded arrest while he was super active given how hyper-vigilant the area was looking for him.

I'm rarely bothered by serial killer accounts but something about the MO of lurking/prowling for weeks on end, raping off and on for hours while the partner is tied up nearby and taking breaks to do shit like eat out of the refrigerator and stealing heirlooms (while leaving valuables) feels extra depraved. It's weirdly less disturbing after he graduated to killing.

Still a curious lack of information on him imo.

It's a fascinating case, and if you listen to the Casefile podcast, they did a 3 or 4 part series where they described basically every one of his crimes in detail. Also played recordings of him calling his victims years later and calling an anonymous social worker help line.

Actually, he might be in prison for longer than you think. Despite his apparently frail and confused condition, it's all an act.

Right before they arrested him, they saw him very physically active, and even zooming around town on a motorcycle. He also seemed very alert and not senile at all.

Once he was arrested, he acted like he was frail, weak, unable to walk, and confused. It was assumed he was faking being a frail, senile old man to get sympathy.

He did something similar once when he was on his crime spree. A police officer found him walking around a neighborhood after the string of robberies he had committed in the then-recent past. The officer started questioning him, and he was very afraid he wouldn't be able to explain what he was doing there, and everything would unravel.

He put on a very effeminate, soft, meek sounding voice, and said something like, "I promise I didn't do anything bad, please don't hurt me." The police officer let his guard down, as DeAngelo seemed so docile and non-threatening. While the officer was pondering what to next, DeAngelo whipped out a gun and shot the officer. The policeman survived and was able to describe the encounter.

He was the Michael Jordan or burglars too. He hit 120 houses in Visalia in a short time, and somehow didn't get caught. How does someone accomplish that?

He also didn't start off a murderer. He went from a burglar to a rapist to a rapist/murderer over time.
