WSOP replacing all of their chips

I'm a member of a poker chip forum (pokerchipforum.com). It's basically a forum for chip nerds. People who make custom sets. Sell / buy chips, etc.

Paulson, who is the main chip manufacturer for most casinos stopped selling to the home market years ago. This led to paulson sets, especially mint ones, to become very sought after.

Welp, the nerds there came up with a plan to trick Paulson (GPI) into making them a brand new set(s). Essentially, they were able to get custom Paulsons, mint / brand new. They did this by literally pretending that they were opening up two new cruise ships that would have casinos on them. This was a massive group buy. They were able to acquire two cash sets and two tourney sets. We are talking about tens of thousands of chips here.

One of the tourney sets was modeled off of the WSOP chips that are used.

Apparently, Caesars was none to happy to know that thousands of knock off WSOP chips are now floating around out there. They are forcing Pauslon to replace all the chips for free.

It'll be nice to see new chips in play during the WSOP, but kind of sad to see the old chips retire. Thanks for the post.

    That's a hilarious story.

I still think we will be hearing about a counterfeit or kept/stolen chip scandal at the WSOP soon enough.

I've theorized on radio that it's+EV to swipe $1000 and $5000 tournament chips in the later stages, as their value in the early stages is higher (especially in low buyin tournaments).

Also, if you swipe such chips, it's not difficult to put them back on your stack if you end up needing them.

And then there's the counterfeit issue. The events are way too big and crowded for people to notice good counterfeit jobs.

I would never do these things myself, but I've always wondered if stuff like this is happening.

Happens all the time in the LA tournaments, especially with the Asians. Had a few offer me tournament chips and said they would give them to me in the bathroom to avoid the cameras.

A new rack in play at the 2018 WSOP looks like this -- with a custom WORLD SERIES OF POKER mold. The more common chips previously used for the WSOP Main Event are still in play. The dailies seem to be a mix of an older WSOP plastic rack and a newer plastic rack. Still...it's progress.

$1500 Big Blind Ante event used the old chips, as did the $10k O8. $1500 O8 used the new ones.

    Hmm.

So it appears maybe only the 3pm $1500 events use the new chips.

    Interesting.

This is the set I believe Caesars had an issue with...

Yup, indeed that's similar to the secondary WSOP chipset, often used at 3pm events.

So the WSOP chipset with the grey 100 value has been replaced, while the one with the black 100 value has not.

It appears they had more chips made for the main chipset, so the cost of replacing the secondary one is probably not as high as originally thought.

I think this is the set they replaced:

The above photo was taken in 2017, before the replacement.

Agreed. These are the 25 and 100 chips from that old rack. It has fewer chips (quantity wise) than the other clay rack used for the Main Event, so this rack was only used for high buy-in / small field events -- usually the 3pm events. The inlay is nothing like the WSOP rack, but the primary color and insert colors/pattern is identical. I'm surprised that the WSOP caught this. It's not a big deal. Cash game chips can easily be redeemed at the cage in a rack with only the edges showing, but tournament chips aren't redeemed and can't be mistaken for WSOP chips when put into the pot.
