You have to be aggressive with homeless people who will just squat at a table and drive away all the customers. I am guessing the employees just mistake these guys for homeless guys and did the standard protocol, which was call the police to tell them to GTFO. Also, I am sure as usual the media is giving a very one sided propagandized reporting of this incident, and there is more than we are being told that would justify calling the police.

I find it infinitely amusing that a pretentious douchebag company with 200,000 employees, one employee calls the police to deal with a couple belligerent loiterers (where it seems there was a well established loitering problem at the establishment and the established protocol to deal with loiterers was to call the police), and now all the race baiter are up in arms and the CEO has to say all this PC bullshit and the company is going to have to spend millions on completely useless unconscious bias training, and it isn't going to matter because once the race baiters smell blood they never relent, and it is never enough.
I have actually had times where I was killing time in a Starbucks and/or had to use the restroom, and I always just bought a $2 cup of small coffee. Some of the times I probably didn't even have to, the employees might have let me loiter and/or use the restroom buying nothing, but I always found it more expedient just to buy the coffee and not even have to deal with that.
Also, for the black dude that recorded the Starbucks employee in Los Angeles, pretty much every establishment in Los Angeles (including Starbucks) is very aggressive about not letting anyone use their restrooms without buying something. I myself have been turned down on more than one occasion in Starbucks and other establishments when I tried to just use the restroom. Los Angeles is just a shitty city (Philadelphia probably is too), and in shitty cities when you stop in places to use the restroom they tend to not let you as a blanket policy regardless of your demographics.
I've been persecuted in more ways than most but so far haven't been told I can't use a washroom. I honestly thought one of the reasons places had washrooms was to try to bait people who wouldn't have entered otherwise into buying something. Finding out that buying something is prerequisite to taking a god damn piss blows my mind.

Imagine that you really have to go and some flunky barista cuts you off as you are almost to the urinal and tells you that you can't piss til buying something. The issue is that the homeless people use public restrooms as bathrooms (I am not exaggerating, they take showers in sinks) and places to masturbate, and will often lock themselves in public bathrooms for an hour at a time to do their foul deeds. And gang members (almost always black or hispanic males) also tag public bathrooms up and vandalize them to mark their territory (and just generally to be destructive assholes).
Starbucks (and pretty much every other place) doesn't want their employees to be deciding who should and should not be allowed to use the restroom, because then they have to deal with fallout from discrimination issues, so they make the blanket policy that no non paying customers can use restrooms and make it almost impossible to use their restrooms without being vetted first.
It is funny, you say you can't imagine not being allowed to use a public restroom. Whenever I travel out of the city, I experience the opposite amazement that at most public places employees will let you use walk in, use their restroom and leave, without giving you any shit or telling you to GTFO.
In NYC there are many places that require you to put a pin in to unlock the bathroom. Doesn't matter what you look like, if you walk in and ask for the code without spending money - you're not getting it. (Mcdonalds, Applebees, Heartland Brewery for example)
There are also some places where the bathroom can only be unlocked by an employee pushing a secret button which unlocks the door for 10 seconds. (obv they aren't pushing it for non customers)
Ironically, Starbucks isn't one of them (at least the ones I've seen). They are one of the very few places that allow anyone to walk in and go directly to the bathroom and I always thought it was really dumb of them.
I have frequent small meetings at coffee shops around Manhattan and would never agree to Starbucks (unless it's in the lobby of an office building) because they are by far the most filthy option, often smell of homeless and the line for the bathroom is often longer than the line for coffee (which is usually ridiculously long ). And as far as the last part it did hit me that I have been to a few places that had a locked bathroom door and then you go ask what the fuck. Then the lady hands you some giant log attached to a key and and right as you grab it you realize your hand has probably never been dirtier... but you think to yourself well this bathroom must be nice since they protect it so well. Can only speak for NYC, but there are a decent number of public bathrooms around the city. Most parks and indoor public areas plus they even have these weird permanent porta-potty things in the middle of the sidewalk which I'm pretty sure only a homeless person would use.
You can also just piss on any building or subway stop without getting a funny look.
So the part in the latest Silicon Valley where Jarod had marked off usable bathrooms just got a lot funnier.
